Most of our energy still comes from fossil fuels. But where do they come from? For over a century, fossil fuels have powered almost everything. Our homes, cars, planes, food production, and much more. They made energy cheap and available in huge quantities. Coal, oil, and gas all come from plants and organisms that lived millions of years ago. When these organisms died, they often built up in wet, oxygen-poor environments like swamps and seabeds. Because there wasn’t much oxygen, they didn’t decompose completely. Over millions of years, layers of sediment buried this material and the combination of heat and pressure transformed it into coal, oil, and natural gas. So every time we burn fossil fuels, we’re releasing energy that took millions of years to form and we’re using it all in several decades. But we’re also releasing something else. Carbon that was locked underground for millions of years. And that carbon is driving climate change today! So if we want a stable climate, the next step is changing how we convert energy. If the world takes its climate targets seriously, the coming decades will see fossil fuel systems shrinking as clean energy systems grow. In this episode, I talk with associate professor Emily Grubert about the issues that may arise during this “mid-transition” period. She has fascinating new study on the physical and financial cliffs that fossil fuel systems may go over as they decline and reach their “minimum viable scale” — and argues that public ownership of these dying industries might be the only way to gracefully phase them out. #⚡️

Do you know the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy? 🤔 Renewable energy like solar, wind, and hydropower is clean, sustainable, and never runs out. 🌞💨💧 While non-renewable energy like coal, oil, and natural gas creates pollution and will eventually finish. 🚫 From energy source → power plant → electricity → homes, this is how our world runs! 💡 Switching to renewable energy is the key to a greener future and saving our planet. 🌱 Learn smart, stay aware, and share this with friends! 🚀 #cleanenergy #scienceexplained #solarpower

What if everything we assumed about the green energy transition was wrong? The common belief is that solar panels and wind turbines are directly replacing coal plants, but industry experts tell a much more complicated story. Because renewable energy is intermittent—reliant on the sun shining and the wind blowing—it creates massive stability challenges for the power grid. When the clouds roll in or the wind dies down, the grid needs instant, reliable backup to prevent blackouts. This reality forces a difficult question: Can we actually shut down fossil fuel plants, or are we just becoming more dependent on them to support a green grid? It’s a complex tug-of-war between sustainability goals and the physics of keeping the lights on. #GreenEnergy #RenewableEnergy #EnergyGrid #SustainabilityFacts #ClimateChange

The percent share of energy consumption coming from renewable sources has grown rapidly since the start of the 21st century. The share of renewables has doubled globally (purple line). It’s tripled in the United States (yellow line), historically the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions. And it has more than tripled in China (aqua line), which overtook the U.S. as the country with the largest annual carbon dioxide emissions back in 2006. The planet is already experiencing the impacts of greenhouse gases emitted since the start of the Industrial Revolution. The longer it takes us to reach net-zero emissions, the more expensive (and deadly) the impacts will be. But remember: “There’s reason for alarm, but not for despair.”

🌍 We're literally wrapping the Earth in a blanket - and turning up the heat. Greenhouse gases like CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide trap heat in our atmosphere. Sounds small. The impact? Anything but. 🌡️ Temperatures rising. 🧊 Ice caps melting. 🌊 Sea levels climbing. And the scary part? We're the ones adding more to the blanket every single day. But here's the thing -understanding the problem is the first step to fixing it. 💡 💬 Drop a 🌿 if you learned something new today! 👉 Follow Carbon Clock for more Climate 101 — because climate change makes more sense than you think. #sustainableeducation #sustainability #esg #GreenhouseGases #carbonaccounting
