GILately, I’ve had quite a few people reach out asking how I manage working as an arborist despite being on the smaller side (for context I’m 5ft 3 and definitely on the light side) — some are considering a career change themselves, others are parents wanting to support their kids starting apprenticeships, I love these messages. 😀
I truly believe arboriculture needs a greater diversity of people—including those who are sensitive, thoughtful, and deeply caring. The physical demands can sometimes push great people away which is a shame. I know I would’ve been one of them, had I not been so damn stubborn—and driven by a deep sense of responsibility to care for trees!
From a personal perspective, I handled the physical side of the job pretty poorly in the beginning. I’d just come out of a biblical scale mental breakdown —hospital edition (mid-life can do that!)—and went straight into a full-time job at a large firm. I wasn’t fit at all 🤣, and I learned the hard way through injury and fatigue.
But working outdoors has helped rebuild me from the inside out. These days, I’m extremely protective of the joy this work brings me. That means learning to pace myself and take care of my body—I’m in it for longevity above all else.
We’re lucky, too, that companies have made great strides in creating equipment and technology that make the job more accessible. It’s a great time to be entering the industry, and it’s thanks to these advancements that someone like me could change careers in her 40s.
But the rest? That comes down to attitude—prioritising your body, your mind, and your spirit. The work can be really relentless and unforgiving, no doubt about it. But with care, a bit of perseverance and the right support, it’s also one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.
