Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is much more common than doctors and patients realize, affecting about 2-3% of the population. The exact cause of VSS is not fully understood, though is believed to be some form of hyperexcitability. Certain parts of the brain become activated. leading to symptoms of tiny flickering dots, afterimages, trailing images, floaters, ringing in the ears, and sometimes depersonalization. As a neuro-ophthalmologist, I take care of hundreds of patients with VSS. I also have a unique perspective on this condition since I have VSS myself. I understand what it is like to live with the constant visual and non-visual symptoms. There is no scientifically proven effective treatment or cure for VSS, though clinical trials are in progress. That being said, there are ways to manage the symptoms and be able to lead a relatively normal life. Śnieg optyczny – visual snow VS, to zaburzenie widzenia objawiające się obecnością dynamicznego szumu wizualnego w postaci migających jasnych punktów, przypominających śnieżenie w telewizorze. Występowanie szacuje się na 2%. Prawdopodobną przyczyną śniegu optycznego są nieprawidłowości na poziomie neuronów w przebiegu drogi wzrokowej. Co najważniejsze, osoby z tym zaburzeniem doświadczają znacznego obniżenia jakości życia. Skarżą się na duże trudność m.in. w czytaniu, korzystaniu z urządzeń elektronicznych i prowadzeniu samochodu. Inne towarzyszące objawy to nadwrażliwość na światło, błyski światła w polu widzenia, trudność z widzeniem w nocy , problemy z równowagą, powidoki (utrzymanie wrażenia wzrokowego, po ustaniu bodźca), męty, szumy uszne, drżenie, nadwrażliwość słuchowa, ból podczas dotykania skóry. W trakcie diagnozy ważne jest badanie okulistyczne, ponieważ wiele z objawów towarzyszących śniegowi optycznemu występuje również w chorobach siatkówki. Następnie wykonuje się badanie neurologiczne. Gdy nie stwierdzi się pierwotnej przyczyny, leczenie skupia się na zmniejszeniu objawów. Nie ma jeszcze ustalonego standardu leczenia.  U niektórych sukcesy osiągnięto stosując farmakologię. Optometryści mogą pomóc, dobierając barwione soczewki okularowe. Najczęściej pacjenci zgłaszają zmniejszenie objawów przy barwieniu typu FL-41 i BPI-Omega. U wielu pacjentów z objawami śniegu optycznego stwierdza się niedomogę konwergencji lub inne zaburzenia akomodacyjno-wergencyjne. W takim przypadku może pomóc terapia widzenia.
