“I want to believe that my grandsons will see it…I only hope I don’t die before that happens” @valendeviaje told me her dream was for her grand children to grow up in a Venezuela thriving through sustainable tourism. It broke my heart to hear her fear that her dream may remain just a dream. But at the same time, it was inspiring to feel her unwithering dedication. After decades traveling every corner of Venezuela, she launched her YouTube channel at age 68 to show the country’s immense potential through its people. But the moment that changed how I viewed the future of Venezuela was when she spoke about the millions of people who had to leave: “There are 8 million Venezuelans in the world who are our best ambassadors we can have — because you can see who we are.” And she was right, I’ve seen it myself. Venezuelans outside the country carried the same warmth and resilience as those I met inside. Her dream to see Venezuela thrive through sustainable tourism may feel far away, but it isn’t hers alone. People like @isaiaslandaeta , follow in Valentina’s foot steps highlighting the richness of Venezuelan culture; @rickymargarita , @michicubagua , and @alejelinson , continue to prove that Margarita can be a destination not only for Semana Santa, but all year round; and @gorozco1987 , showcases Venezuela’s biodiversity to attract eco-tourism. I am from Japan and not Venezuelan, but during my six months there, I felt the same potential they believe in. It’s what pushed me to create a 35-minute VR experience, so that those who cannot go, can still immerse themselves in Venezuela’s immense potential through its people. In the spirit of continuing her message, when I drove 15,000 miles across the U.S. hosting exhibits to show this VR experience, we named our van Valentina. My dream is to return to Venezuela and show her the film she helped make possible. But until then, I’ll keep running around the world sharing my experience, while my friends in the U.S. ( @whereisnoa.tour ) keep driving Valentina sharing this story. Esta es la historia de Noa con Venezuela: un joven mochilero japonés que, antes de viajar a Brasil desde Colombia, decidió pasar unos días en Venezuela sin imaginar que sería el destino que lo llevaría a recorrer el mundo con un documental de realidad virtual. Tras seis meses viajando por el país y conviviendo con locales, Noa entendió que la esencia de Venezuela no está solo en sus monumentales paisajes, sino también en la cercanía de su gente. Durante ese tiempo de vida nómada en este país de contrastes y de historias de exilio y dolor, Noa encontró una forma de mirar a Venezuela con los ojos de quien descubre la belleza en una mirada, y la humildad en el gesto cotidiano. If it wasn’t for this man I may have never visited Venezuela I met @germanendry on the beach in Palomino, Colombia. I barely spoke Spanish and he didn’t speak English but we understood each other. I told him that I was afraid of going to Venezuela because of all of the horror stories I had heard. But unlike others, Endry encouraged me to go. He was a surf instructor originally from Aragua and said that there is a beautiful small surf town called Cuyagua where he has a friend named Chuchu ( @newpointcuyagua ) So once I was in Venezuela, I took a bus from Valencia to Maracay, another bus through the sketchy roads to Ocumare and a 45min moto taxi ride to Cuyagua, while asking everyone on the way, “where is Chuchu?” And that’s how I found Chuchu. When he found out that I hadn’t brought a tent to camp in he went to his shed, pulled out a hammock and put it up between two palm trees right on the beach. I ended up sleeping 5 days on the beach, showering in the river, eating empanadas con marisco, and becoming friends with the now famous fisherman, @matosturismo.cuyagua It was the hospitality of people like Chuchu and Mato that inspired me to make a 35min VR documentary highlighting the people I met during my 6 month adventure in Venezuela.
