IV1. So much will be out of your control 🌀
There are gonna be things regarding publicity, marketing––even the cover of your book––that might be beyond your control.
This is going to depend on your team/contract, of course, but be prepared to go with the flow. Not having total control CAN be a good thing a lot of the times…and not-so-good sometimes.
2. Find your community 🫂
I probably wouldn’t have remained sane without my author friends. Having a writing community that you can celebrate your wind with (and go to during your lows) is such a necessity!
You don’t need dozens of writer friends, but having at least one person who understands what you’re going through is so important and makes you feel less alone.
3. Go outside! Touch grass! 🌳
This is kind of a joke, but not really! It’s easy to get sucked into the online writing space and forget about the outside world. When things start to feel overwhelming, go outside and reconnect with the world outside of publishing!
Sometimes things feel like the end of the world when really, they’re not. Go touch some grass and hug a tree—I promise you’ll feel better!
4. Comparison is a liar!!! 🙅🏻♀️
Comparison will steal the joy you deserve to feel during your debut year. Everybody’s journey will be different. You can achieve certain goals and still feel the sting of not achieving everything your peers are.
That little voice begging you to compare your experience to someone else’s is a LIAR! Focus on your book. Your journey. You deserve to feel the joy!!!
5. You can’t please everyone 🤷🏻♀️
It’s tempting to read reviews and change your writing based on criticisms you might find online, but at the end of the day, you can’t please everyone! One reader might love multi-POV books, and another might hate them! Go with your gut.
Write the book YOU want to read. Your readers will find you.
