WOAda Lovelace was born in 1815. The daughter of poet Lord Byron. As a teenager, she met Charles Babbage — the man building the first mechanical computer: the Analytical Engine.
No one understood his work. Except Ada.
She translated an article about his machine — and added her own notes. Her notes were 3x longer than the article. Inside those notes? The first algorithm ever written for a machine.
She imagined computers not just doing math
- but creating music, graphics, even Al.
They ignored her. For decades, Babbage got all the credit. But in 1953 — scientists found her work. Realized she had written the first computer program. Today, the U.S.
Department of Defense has a programming language named after her: ADA. The world forgot her for 100 years.

Ada Lovelace was born in 1815, when women weren’t expected to study math, let alone change it. Her mother trained her in mathematics to prevent her from inheriting her father Lord Byron’s “dangerous imagination.” It backfired beautifully.
When Ada encountered Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, she saw what no one else did. This machine wouldn’t just calculate numbers. It could manipulate symbols. It could follow instructions.
It could create. In 1843, she wrote a set of notes describing how the engine could compute Bernoulli numbers. That algorithm is now considered the first computer program in history.
More hauntingly, she predicted computers could one day compose music and generate art, over a century before computers existed.
She died at 36, dismissed as a translator in her lifetime. The world caught up long after. She didn’t invent a machine. She invented the idea of software.
