Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Wednesday criticized the Trump administration’s “ill-advised threats” toward Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, arguing they only serve to alienate the U.S. closest allies with little to gain.   “Close ties with our northernmost allies are what make America’s extensive reach in the Arctic possible. And I have yet to hear from this administration a single thing we need from Greenland that this sovereign people is not already willing to grant us,” the former majority leader said on the floor.   “Unless and until the president can demonstrate otherwise, then the proposition at hand today is very straightforward: incinerating the hard-won trust of loyal allies in exchange for no meaningful change in U.S. access to the Arctic.”   President Trump renewed his threats for the U.S. to take over Greenland following the U.S. military operation that arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, worrying allies in Europe and members of Congress alike.   “The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” the president wrote Wednesday on social media.   “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”   Sen. That moment when a stepchild repeats something word-for-word from a heated coparenting conversation confirming that an adult has shared things they shouldn’t. Sometimes as a way to alienate, manipulate emotions, or make the child feel responsible for their feelings. So as stepmoms, what do we do? We don’t feed into it. We don’t defend or argue. Instead, we acknowledge how hard it must have been for them to hear adult problems they were never meant to carry. We apologize that they were put in the middle, and we validate whatever feelings come up for them. We encourage them to trust their experiences and relationships, not anyone else’s anger or opinions. We reassure them that we are a safe place, someone who will listen, help them talk things through, and support them in figuring out to respond to what they’ve been told. We explain our intentions and goals for their life. To be a source of stability, love, consistency, and a healthy environment. And as tempting as it may be, we do not slander the other parent or fire back. Because doing that only pulls the child deeper into conflict and makes them feel like they must pick a side. And yes, every situation has its nuances. There are moments where we can gently share truths that are appropriate for their age and understanding.
