DANanga Parbat. Summer 2024. Attempt n°4.
After the bitter taste that turning around in 2023 left me with, to go straight back in 2024 felt like a logical decision. The more clues and pieces of info I collected of what was proving to be a tricky puzzle, the higher my chances of success would be.
This time, I teamed up with my great friend @mike_d_arnold and added a new twist to the plot. Mikey’s true love is steep skiing, so our plan was for him to descend on skis, and for me to fly down.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not at all into skiing, let alone skiing steeps; so to see Mikey, and later, @tiphaineduperier and #BorisLangenstein skiing some of the insanely steep and exposed terrain on the Rupal face was ultra impressive.
We had hoped for a decent weather window early in the season but it didn’t materialise before Mikey had to leave to continue with life. I got lucky and was adopted by Tiphaine and Boris to make a team of three for the summit attempt when the weather finally allowed. We gave it a really good go and made it to 7550m over on the Diamir side before having to turn around…again! But, there was no doubt in any of our minds that we would come back the next year. And that was this year, 2025, which brings us full circle to the end of this story and the summit of Nanga Parbat via the Schell route on the 24th of June.

DASometimes you need to be patient, and put many years of effort into a dream in the hope that it might come true.
I dreamt of climbing an 8000m peak by a route other than the normal one.
In my case, the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat, via the Schell route, has been that dream for the last 12 years. It’s taken 5 attempts, but now that I’ve achieved it, I know that it’s all been worthwhile.
Summiting Nanga Parbat in alpine style with @tiphaineduperier and #BorisLangenstein was incredible; but to be able to fly down from 7700m all the way back to base camp on the same day, has brought my joy to the next level.
