Here’s what most people get wrong about debating. World debate champ Julia Dhar says the foundation of debate is rebuttal—it’s not just making claims, it’s responding and engaging directly. At first, she thought the best debaters had to be extreme, able to make polarizing ideas sound good. But actually, she realized, the strongest persuaders start by finding common ground. They focus on what everyone can agree on—no matter how small—and use that shared understanding as the foundation. This shared reality is what pushes back against the confusion caused by alternative facts. Here’s the tip: face-to-face conversations make a difference. Hearing someone’s voice helps us see them as human and encourages us to truly listen instead of just arguing. #Politics #Communication #TED #Tips #Debate #Advice

Speakers lose their audience more often than they realize - and it usually happens long before the conclusion. In today’s reel, I break down a technique I’m seeing over and over again here at the Harvard Speech & Debate Tournament: the echo line. It’s simple, powerful, and unforgettable. You open with one sentence. You teach. You tell the story. And then you bring that same sentence back at the end - not as a quote, but as a conclusion. When your audience hears it the second time, it lands with meaning because they’ve just walked through the proof with you. If they remember the line, they remember the lesson. That’s the Speak Up Edge. Got a presentation coming up and want to walk into the room with clarity, confidence, and control? Quick, easy, effective 👏🏻 Never be at a loss for words again with these comebacks. Many times we feel we have to have an elaborate response to something we don’t like and are stumped in the moment. Then we beat ourselves up in hindsight when we think of something good. But short and sweet responses like these are easy for us to remember and still hold the other person accountable. Keep it real and don’t take any sh*t with kindness, class, and confidence. 😉 To recap, the 5 listed here are: 1️⃣ That’s an odd comment. 2️⃣ That’s a strange thing to say. 3️⃣ This is uncomfortable. 4️⃣ That’s not very nice. 5️⃣ I’m surprised you feel comfortable saying that. What else would you add to this list? #wellwithraele #communication #advocateforyourself #communicationcoach #clapback

Want to transform your communication skills? Start with this self-awareness exercise. Record yourself speaking for 5 minutes on any topic. Leave it for a day (this removes the initial self-criticism). Then review it in three stages: Stage 1: Watch on mute Focus purely on body language. What are your hands doing? How do your facial expressions support your message? Notice your posture and movement patterns. Stage 2: Listen without watching Turn the phone around and just listen. Pay attention to vocal qualities: your pace, volume, tone variations, and energy levels. What do you like? What needs work? Stage 3: Get it transcribed This reveals your communication patterns in black and white. You'll spot repetition, circular reasoning, filler words, and structural issues you never noticed before. One session gives you 5-10 concrete improvement areas. That's your roadmap to becoming a more effective communicator. Comment "AMPLIFY" for my 3 part video series where I teach the full process!
