🧠 APD has NOTHING to do with “just listening better.” Let’s set the record straight 👇 🔹 Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) isn’t about hearing loss — it’s about how the brain interprets what it hears. 🔹 People with APD can hear sounds clearly but struggle to make sense of them — especially in noisy or busy environments. 🔹 It can affect children AND adults, impacting communication, learning, focus, and everyday conversations. 🔹 With the right support and strategies, people with APD can absolutely thrive! 🎧 It’s not a “listening problem.” It’s a processing difference. #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #APDawareness #EducationalAudiology #Audiologist #AuditoryProcessing #HearingAndBrain #SLP #SchoolAudiologist #Neurodiversity #AdultAPD #APDsupport #BrainBasedLearning #ListenToLearn #AuditoryProcessingTesting

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing is normal.   In this reel, Low Fang Yin highlights key symptoms of APD. While these symptoms may resemble those of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), they are not the same. APD involves difficulty with listening, while ADHD is characterised by attention challenges. They can occur together.   If you suspect APD, consult an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis.   #NUHOtolaryngology #NUHENT #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #APD #APDAwarenessDay — Low Fang Yin is a Senior Speech Therapist from the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

About 1 in 20 people have auditory processing disorder—meaning their ears hear just fine, but their brain’s like “nah, I missed that.” If you constantly say “what?” or need subtitles to survive, you’re not alone. Do you often find yourself saying “what?” or “huh?” 😅 Many people with ADHD also struggle with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) 🎧. ADHD makes it harder to focus and remember things, which can worsen auditory issues 🧠. Juggling ADHD symptoms can add to the difficulty of processing sounds 🤯. Since APD and ADHD often go hand in hand, it’s important to get a thorough evaluation and personalized help 👩‍⚕️. Some symptoms of APD may include: * Difficulty figuring out where a sound is coming from * Difficulty understanding spoken language in noisy backgrounds * Taking longer than typical to respond to when spoke to in conversation * Difficulty understanding and following rapid speech * Often asking “what?” or “huh?” when spoken to, or asking for the speaker to repeat themselves * Trouble paying attention and being easily distracted If you are looking for help and a supportive community join our small ADHD coaching group in August ☺️🩵💪 🦋 Class takes place on Tuesdays from 1 PM EST/ 7 PM CET ✨Optional weekly body doubling session on Thursdays from 10 AM EST/ 4 PM CET 🔗 Comment Group Coaching for more info 🚨 💜I Looking forward to meeting you soon! #adhd #adhdeducation #adhdexplained #ADHDInsights #ParentingConcerns #FocusOnBehaviors #AttentionStruggles #ChildWellbeing #ADHDRealities #adhdcommunity #scienceexplained #adhdforbeginners #coaching #adhdinwomen #neurodiversity #adhdcoach #adhdempowerment

A while back I was in a support group and we did this activity together. We tried listening to one set of directions while other voices started overlapping. The purpose was to simulate what a person with auditory hallucinations goes through and how difficult that can be. A few days ago I was filming an IG reel and the audio kept layering onto itself. It was honestly maddening but then I thought of that experiment and how this is probably what a lot of our kids who have difficulty with auditory processing experience. For some of our kids, it can take a long time to process a direction. If we continue giving more directions, or repeating a direction before they have had time to process it, their brain can start spinning out of control and lose focus. For others like me, it can be nearly impossible to have a conversation in a room full of people because you are hearing every other conversation/noise and cannot stay on track with your own thoughts or pay attention to what the other person is saying. This activity was very eye opening for me as I know there are many people who can struggle with auditory processing difficulties or auditory hallucinations including but not limited to autistic folks, ADHDers & SPDers, those with bipolar, schizoaffective, schizophrenia or other diagnosis involving psychosis. The lesson? Make sure you are giving your kids enough time to process the information/directions/questions you are giving/asking or give them ways to accommodate. . . . . #auditory #auditoryprocessingdisorder #auditoryprocessing #hallucination #processing #spd #autistic #neurodivergent #accommodation #occupationaltherapy #themoreyouknow

Auditory processing disorder is a hearing issue that should be diagnosed by audiologists, not psychologists. Auditory processing disorder is a disorder of the auditory system that causes a disruption in the way an individual understands what they are hearing. For children with ADHD, many parents may be concerned about auditory processing issues because children with ADHD struggle to follow through with directions and listening. The main difference between ADHD and APD is that people with APD would struggle more on tests of sound/hearing administered by an audiologist (de Wit et al., 2018). Research also suggests that children with ADHD may score lower on tests of auditory processing, but these errors decrease when given methylphenidate for their ADHD (Lanzetta-Valdo et al., 2017). Because of this, it can be difficult to distinguish APD symptoms from those of ADHD. What questions do you have about APD? Okay so many people have asked me, what do I do now?? If you suspect APD: 👂🏽Schedule a full audiological evaluation with an audiologist and request APD-specific testing (This one is important. 👂🏽Explain history: listening difficulties, noise, academic impact, other diagnoses. 👂🏽Rule out hearing loss, attention, language, or cognitive issues (they’ll do this, not you) 👂🏽Get a multidisciplinary referral if needed (SLP, psychologist, educator). 👂🏽Discuss results, management options (auditory training, strategies, environmental changes, assistive devices). I know that’s a lot but once you get to an audiologist they’ll walk you through the rest :) #drsasha #adhd

Sometimes it’s not your hearing. It’s your processing. If you have CPTSD and it feels like you “didn’t hear” someone or their words register late.. a specialist once explained to me that delayed auditory processing is common in trauma survivors. Your ears can work perfectly fine. But when your nervous system is in survival mode, the brain prioritizes threat detection over language processing. That’s why it can feel like: • Sound goes muffled • Words don’t register • You need repetition • It clicks after a delay CPTSD affects cognition and perception.. not just emotions. 🤍Save this if it helped you understand something about yourself 🤍Follow for more trauma-informed education.
