TRMost people only use Microsoft Authenticator for 2FA in the form of time-based one-time passwords. In other words, those numbers that refresh every 15 seconds or so. But some people were using Microsoft Authenticator to store their actual passwords too. Well, Microsoft just got rid of all of those saved passwords. Double check your app. If the passwords are still there, export & move them over to a dedicated password manager immediately, before the updated hits your Authenticator app. And if they’re already gone, start chipping away at password resets for your accounts that are now essentially locked out.

Hackers don’t just steal accounts- they scam your friends, lock you out, and sometimes delete everything you’ve ever posted. That’s why I never skip these 3 things:
1️⃣ App-based Multi-Factor Authentication on every account- A password alone is useless if it leaks in a data breach (and trust me, they leak all the time). MFA adds a second code that only you can generate. And here’s the catch: text codes can be stolen in SIM swap attacks. That’s why I only use authenticator apps- the codes refresh every 30 seconds and can’t be intercepted.
2️⃣ Recovery codes- If you ever lose your phone or delete your authenticator app, these are the only way back into your account. Without them, you could be locked out for good.
3️⃣ Login alerts- If someone tries to log in from another device, I know instantly. It’s the only way to catch a silent takeover before it’s too late.
These aren’t “extras.” They’re the basics that keep you in control of your own accounts.

Two factor authentication (2FA) is a must on all your financial accounts but if you are getting those code verification messages by text message, you are putting yourself at risk. SMS, or Simple Messaging System (think green bubble), is insecure. It’s not encrypted and sent as plaintext.
Bloomberg and Lighthouse Reports shared an investigation in which a million text messages with 2FA codes were visible to a Swiss telecom company - Fink Telecom Services in June 2023. These messages often have the code as well as the sender and recipient. With all the hacked data out there, it’s not difficult to put together a profile and potentially gain access.
You should be using an authenticator app, which rotates codes every 30-60 seconds, such as the Google Authenticator app (free). It’s far more secure than text messages anyone can intercept.

A massive data breach has exposed the personal details of 17.5 million Instagram users globally. A threat actor known as “Solonik” released the data on the dark web, claiming it was harvested via an API leak in late 2024.

Stay vigilant. Hackers don’t need your password if they can trick you into giving them a login code.
