THWater around your water heater can look like it’s leaking, but it might actually just be at your expansion tank and/or temperature & pressure relief valve that has failed. More commonly it’s going to be your expansion tank if you’re on a closed system because as water heats up, it expands and has nowhere to go unless there’s an expansion tank otherwise it comes out through your temperature and pressure relief valve.
A quick tap on the side of the expansion tank can let you know whether it is waterlogged just by the way that it sounds. This may be a little challenging if you don’t know what to listen for, but basically a hollow sound is what you’re looking for and if it sounds solid, then it’s full of water.
Since this one is waterlogged, we’re going to swap it out with a new @eastman.plumbing expansion tank, get it charged up to the appropriate pressure, which is going to be at the incoming pressure of the residence and make this relief valve from letting water through.
We’re also going to strap it up to take any unnecessary weight off the piping system and then we’re all done!

BEExpansion tank basics! An expansion tank has a rubber bladder inside that separates air from water. When water heats up and expands, it pushes against the bladder and compresses the air, preventing pressure spikes. As the water cools, the air pushes the water back into the system, keeping pressure steady and protecting your pipes and equipment. Thank you @wattswater for making a damn fine ETX-15 for my system!!
