Carnivores lurking in dark waters - and I’m not talking about gators! This aquatic carnivorous plant is found across Florida in lakes, ponds, and ditches.

We have fifteen species of Utricularia native to Florida. These highly specialized plants are infamous for feeding on small aquatic invertebrates they catch in their bladder-like traps. The unsuspecting prey brush against tiny hairs that trigger a trapdoor on the pressurized traps. As the trap suddenly opens, the organism and water are sucked into the bladder. With the bladder full and the door closed, the plant releases enzymes to digest the organism.
The process takes less than a second and is one of the most sophisticated and fast processes in the plant kingdom.
But they don’t just eat animals - they also trap and digest algae! That’s why many of the traps in this video are black. This seems to be opportunistic feeding, as the algae is inadvertently also sucked in when the traps are triggered. So I guess these are omnivorous plants!

Here planted with a tiny bit of U. quelchii.
Tried to timelapse the wicking of the moss but it was still too damp to see much difference. Tempted to make a long term timelapse tho...

A year and a half ago, my friend @bog_plants gave me a small 5-leaf division of this rare Utricularia. It's now filled this entire 8 x 4 acrylic bowl, and is growing out of the container. Its also produced two spikes of long-lasting hot pink flowers. The 2nd spike just finished blooming. 😊
It's growing in live green sphagnum moss on top of @fluvalaquatics Stratum.

THThis plant here is called utricularia gibba or the bladderwort. It is an aquatic carnivorous plant native to much of the world (in both temperate and tropical climates) and is probably the easiest carnivorous plant to grow due to its small size and adaptability.

This is how it eats; when small aquatic organisms (such as mosquito larvae or water fleas) get to close to the small bladder-shaped traps and touch a trigger hair on them, the trap opens up and sucks them in like a vacuum!

This carnivorous plant is so easy to grow, some aquarium keeps consider it a pest plant in their aquarium and is even considered an invasive species in New Zealand!

All you need to grow this plant is a fairly bright windowsill and a cup or bowl of distilled water with maybe a little bit of peat added. Make sure the cup never empties. If you’re doing a really goodjob at growing it, you might even be rewarded with small yellow orchid-like flowers!
