A single shepherd dog can control an entire flock of sheep without ever touching them. The secret is spatial pressure — the exploitation of every prey animal's flight zone. When a predator (or herding dog) enters the flight zone — the minimum distance at which an animal perceives a threat — the animal moves away. The dog does not chase individual sheep. Instead, it positions itself behind the flock relative to the target destination. This creates a directional pressure wave that pushes the entire group forward. The pressure force follows an inverse-distance relationship: F = (1 − d/R)^1.2, where R is the pressure radius. Sheep closer to the dog flee harder. Sheep at the edge barely react. This gradient is what gives the dog fine control over the flock's direction. The sheep themselves follow boids rules — three local interaction forces that produce emergent flocking: Cohesion: steer toward the average position of nearby neighbors Alignment: match heading with neighbors Separation: avoid crowding When the dog's pressure disrupts this equilibrium, the flock compresses, redirects, and flows toward the pen. Stubborn sheep dampen their flee response, requiring the dog to close distance and work harder. Low cohesion scatters the flock, forcing the dog to repeatedly round up stragglers. Real shepherd dogs like Border Collies instinctively use these pressure mechanics. They arc behind the flock, oscillate side to side, and apply graduated pressure — behaviors directly modeled in this simulation.
