How old is Telugu Script? Long before most of the world began writing… Telugu was already engraved in stone. In 1892, archaeologists uncovered stone relics in Bhattiprolu, Andhra Pradesh—etched with one of the earliest regional scripts in India. Though it resembled Brahmi, this script had unique flips, curves, and sounds that weren’t Sanskrit—it was built for the local tongue. One stone box even mentioned a local king, Kuberaka, and housed Buddha’s bodily relics—linking early Telugu to both power and spirituality. This script evolved over 2,300 years—from Kadamba to Telugu-Kannada to the rounded Telugu script we use today. Why rounded? Palm leaves. Sharp lines tore them. What survives now isn’t just a script—it’s memory carved in syllables. Housed in the Indian Museum, Kolkata the Mahasthan Inscription was discovered in 1931 at the Mahasthangarh site in what is now the Bogra district of Bangladesh and is a fragmentary limestone slab with six lines of text written in the Brahmi script. It features a local official (Mahamatra) stationed in the city of Pundranagara (Mahasthangarh) during famine. We hope you join us this Sunday as we look at some inscriptions. #speakingarchaeologically #citizenarchaeology #archaeology #archaeological #epigraphy #mauryanempire #mauryaninscriptions #brahmi #ancientscripts #mahasthangarh #bangladesh

Even though the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka lived and reigned more than 2000 years ago, his voice continues to ring through the messages he has left behind on his Rock & Pillar Edicts. The edicts of Ashoka are composed in Ashokan Prakrit, primarily written in the Brahmi script, with occasional use of the Kharosthi script. There are also some in Greek & Armaic, and some bilingual. These edicts are categorized into three groups: ‘Minor Rock Edicts,’ ‘Major Rock Edicts,’ and ‘Pillar Edicts.’ The primary focus of these edicts was Ashoka’s Dhamma, which outlines a code of conduct and its observance. At Brahmagiri in Karnataka, we find an inscription written in the Pali language in the Brahmi script. Among other things, it talks about attaining heaven as a fruit of following Dhamma, gods mingling with the people of the earth after Dhamma had been established, how obedience should be rendered to mother, father, elders, masters, relatives and how one should follow moral virtues. But the most fascinating part of this inscription is not the message of Ashoka but the name of the scribe responsible for putting the message down. Nayanjot Lahiri suggests that he could be the writer-clerk and there were different scribes to whom he asked for his name to be written at the end in the Kharoshthi script—a hint that he may be from Gandhara! In Kalsi, where all of the 14 Edicts of Ashoka are found the rock, you notice the scribes run out of place! While in Delhi, Ashoka’s shifted pillar has now become the Saint of the Pillar. Interesting to think about the way in which history is written, read, and how people bestow their own meanings on the pasts they interact with! Before James Prinsep's groundbreaking discovery in 1837, many historians and scholars believed that Ashoka was a mythical or legendary figure, known only through Buddhist texts and traditions. They were skeptical about his existence, considering him a figment of Buddhist imagination. However, Prinsep's deciphering of the Brahmi script and the discovery of the Edicts of Ashoka provided conclusive evidence of Ashoka's historical existence, establishing him as one of the most important figures in Indian history. . . #samrat #buddhism #samratasok #dhamma #bharat #indians #indianhistory

In 1837, a British scholar and officer, James Prinsep, successfully deciphered the ancient Brahmi script. Once the script was understood, historians were finally able to read the edicts carved across the empire by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. This breakthrough revealed the identity of the emperor behind the famous pillars and rock edicts and opened up a major chapter of early Indian history that had been lost for nearly two millennia. Because of this discovery, a huge part of our understanding of ancient India, including Ashoka’s policies, governance, and spread of Buddhism, became clear. . . . . #indianhistory #india #british #mauryanempire

A groundbreaking discovery from Kannur and Kozhikode in Kerala has stunned historians! A 5000-year-old piece of megalithic pottery bearing an inscription in Indus Brahmi script was found — with the phrase "Ga ra Ga ra Ga ra," which may be a Prakrit form of the Sanskrit chant “Har Har Har.” This finding suggests a deep connection between the Indus Valley Civilization and southern India, challenging the long-held notion that it was limited to the north. Similar inscriptions have also been discovered in the Edakkal Caves, and Roman coins found in Kerala indicate ancient global trade links. According to Kovoor Raghavan, Director of the Centre for Indus Brahmi Script Research, this evidence supports the idea that India was culturally and commercially unified thousands of years ago. This reel reveals a forgotten chapter of India's ancient, integrated, and glorious past. . . . To know Brahman is to unlearn everything that is not Brahman. The sages said there are two ways: to deny all that is changing — and to see directly what remains changeless. Beyond name and form, beyond quality and difference, that pure Existence shines — the ground of all that was, is, and will be. As the Upanishads declare: “नेति नेति — Neti, Neti — not this, not this.” (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad 2.3.6) “अहं ब्रह्मास्मि — Aham Brahmāsmi — I am Brahman.” (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad 1.4.10) “तत् त्वम् असि — Tat Tvam Asi — Thou art That.” (Chāndogya Upanishad 6.8.7) “सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म — Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma — All this is Brahman.” (Chāndogya Upanishad 3.14.1) When this truth is seen, all divisions fall away. The seeker, the path, and the goal become one. 🌍 ⸻ 📚 المصادر: • Rig Veda 10.75 – Hymn to the Rivers • Brahmanda Purana • Vishnu Purana, Book 1, Ch. 5 • Bhagavata Purana 3.9.18 • Shatapatha Brahmana XI.1 • K.S.
