WAHappy Anniversary @calmacferries - 175 Years of Serving Scotland
This year marks an extraordinary milestone for Caledonian MacBrayne as it celebrates 175 years of connecting communities, coastlines and islands across Scotland’s west coast.
Founded in 1851 by David Hutcheson, Alexander Hutcheson and David MacBrayne, the company began by linking Glasgow with Oban, Fort William and Inverness via the Crinan Canal and the Caledonian Canal. Through mergers, state ownership and modernisation, the fleet evolved, becoming Caledonian MacBrayne in 1973 and later CalMac Ferries Ltd, continuing a lifeline tradition that remains vital today.
For Waverley, 1973 was a pivotal year too. By then the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer, she operated as part of the Caledonian MacBrayne fleet on Clyde cruises and ferry duties. When Waverley’s withdrawal was announced later that year, her future was uncertain until CalMac gifted her to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for £1.
On 8 August 1974, in James Watt Dock, Greenock, Waverley was officially handed over. In that moment, the preservation story that allows her to sail today truly began.
From paddle steamers to modern ferries, the Clyde and Hebrides have always been shaped by ships and the people who sail them.
Here’s to 175 years of CalMac, and to the vessels that continue to keep Scotland connected.

Save this for your furry ferry travel! 🐾🙌
The ferry we use most for our Scottish Island bagging is Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac)- the West coast ferries serving islands like Mull, Skye, Arran, etc.
🐾Pets travel free, but you must add them to your reservation and get a pet ticket (calmac.co.uk)
You choose how your pet travels:
🐾 Pet in passenger lounge: Bring them into designated indoor pet areas onboard. Limited spaces are available.
🐾Pet remains in vehicle: For pets left in a car or campervan throughout the crossing.
🐾Assistance dogs: Allowed in all public areas (except some children’s play areas) with the correct ticket
🐾If pet lounge space is sold out (which can happen in busy season), you may choose to stay outside on deck with your pet or alternatively leave them in your car.
🐾Although dogs must be kept off seats and on a lead in pet areas, there is plenty of floor space for a settle matt or bed.
🐾 You cannot return to the car deck during the crossing unless staff allow it.

STDozens of ferry passengers were left stranded on the Isle of Gigha after all services from the island were cancelled.
Operator CalMac said they were forced to cancel sailings on the MV Loch Ranza due to issues with its bilge system.
The ferry has served the small island community of Gigha from the port of Tayinloan on the Kintyre peninsula for three decades, carrying 200 passengers and 12 cars per crossing.
On Wednesday, passengers, including elderly and young children, expecting to travel past 5.30pm were left stranded on the Hebridean island.

A long-awaited CalMac ferry has been launched at Ferguson’s shipyard in Port Glasgow.
Crowds cheered as the 3,000-tonne vessel successfully left the slipway, making it the heaviest vessel to have been launched from the Clyde yard.
The MV Glen Rosa is the second of two delayed ferries being built by the nationalised shipyard.
The 102m (335ft) ship was named by newly-qualified welder Beth Atkinson.
