On March 25, 1995, Dan Aykroyd introduced his friends The Tragically Hip as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live.
The band chose to perform “Grace, Too” and “Nautical Disaster,” two singles from their 1994 album Day for Night. The decision drew some criticism, with some suggesting they might have connected more strongly with U.S. audiences and potentially broken through on a larger scale had they played an earlier hit like New Orleans Is Sinking.
During the opening of “Grace, Too,” Gord Downie famously sang “He says I’m Tragically Hip” instead of “Fabulously rich,” a slip that would go on to become a staple for nearly every performance of the song afterward
Ultimately, it was a defining moment in Canadian music history, not just for the band, but for the country as a whole. as the group chose authenticity, proudly bringing their uniquely Canadian voice to an international stage.
