Jeff Bezos just invested in a company trying to reverse aging. Here’s what they’re doing—how it will impact you long you’ll live. Altos Labs is trying to slow—or even reverse—aging at the cellular level using a process called cellular reprogramming. It turns adult cells back into a more youthful state, repairing damage from the inside out. As we age, the protective caps at the ends of our DNA called telomeres, wear down. Once that happens, cells can’t function like they did when they were young. If you stop that breakdown, you could keep cells healthier for much longer. Aging isn’t just wrinkles and gray hair—it’s the biggest risk factor for cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. Slow it down, and you could delay or even prevent these diseases entirely. One of Altos’ founding scientists, Shinya Yamanaka, won the Nobel Prize for discovering how to reprogram cells to a younger state. Scientists just figured out how to reverse aging using AI. And this is a massive breakthrough. We can now reprogram any human cell back to age 20. Heart cells, brain cells, skin cells, all reset to their biological prime. And here’s the wildest part…the technology to do this, has already existed since 2012 (it won the Nobel Prize). But the real breakthrough wasn’t possible until this year, when they supercharged it with AI. It’s a wild story. So in 2006, scientists discovered Yamanaka factors. They’re proteins that can basically convert any normal cell into a universal stem cell. Now this was a huge deal, because these stem cells are basically like magic healers.  If you have torn muscle tissue, you could inject these stem cells into the area and they will turn into the youthful muscle cells you need. So Yamanaka factors were this insane breakthrough, because they allowed any human to turn any cell you already have into these magic healers. But, there was one big problem… It turns out, the original Yamanaka factors weren’t very good at this stem cell conversion. They could do it, but they just weren’t very reliable. Enter OpenAI...and this is where things get crazy. OpenAI designed a special AI model built specifically to create new proteins. Think of it like ChatGPT but for protein engineering. So they took all the Yamanaka research and asked this new AI to go ham on improving it. And get this… Their version was 50x more effective than the original. They tested it on 50 year old cells and it successfully started repairing 30% of their cells in just 7 days. This is just science fiction…it actually happened. These are real human neurons that can actually think and learn for themselves. When scientists combine them with silicon chips they bring the computer to life. Now if you’re like me, you’re probably wondering one thing… Why are scientists doing this? It feels a bit much to be growing human brains just to put them inside of computers. Well listen to this…it turns out, human brain cells have extremely rare abilities to process things without being trained. Normal computers need to be taught how to solve certain problems. It’s why AI models take so much energy and training data to build. But as soon as you add brain cells to a computer chip, they don’t really need as much training. They kinda start figuring out what to do on their own, just like a human would. Now because of this, these biocomputers are super efficient. A regular supercomputer might use 40M watts of power to solve a complex task. The human brain can do it in just 20. That’s 2M times more efficient. And this means these biocomputers could become the secret weapon to solving humanity’s hardest computational challenges. But…there is just one massive problem… Brain cells tend to die when their temperature deviates from 98.6 degrees. And computers generate a ton of heat. So we have this wild situation where living computers might be the solve for everything, but it’s almost impossible to keep the brain part alive.
