The fastest way to write *forgettable* characters? 👀 Describe them like this: ❌ “She has blue eyes and blonde hair.” Yes, these details can be important to weave in, but on their own, they don’t make readers or agents *feel* anything. If you want characters readers will remember long after they close the book, you need to go deeper. The magic is in the *specific* details—the kind that make your characters feel like real people. Like… 😳 An embarrassing memory they still cringe about → “Alex hasn’t stepped foot in that hallway since 11th grade when he accidentally called Mr. Thompson “Mom” and the entire class lost it for a week straight.” 😢 The last time they cried (and why) → “The second the father-daughter dance started, the tears hit—quiet, uninvited, and all about the dance Emma knew she’d never have with the father she’d never see again.” 😁 What attracts them to someone (and what immediately turns them off) → “Liam always notices the quiet ones, the ones who catch things others miss. But if someone talks over the waitress or scrolls during a conversation? He’s already out.” Want help bringing that layer of depth to your book? Drop KNOWMYCHARACTERS in the comments and I’ll send my free worksheet your way 💫

Your characters aren’t bad… They’re just underdeveloped. When you focus too much on vibes, aesthetics, and trendy tropes, they fall flat. So if you want to write dynamic characters that evolve with the story, you have to dig into their: ✨goals & motivations ✨internal conflicts & wounds ✨fears, desires, and contradictions ✨choices that actually drive the plot forward Once you understand these things, your novel practically writes itself. 💫To know who they really are at their core being, start by commenting MAGIC. I’ll send over my free Character Profile Workbook to help you craft believable, messy, lovable (or hateable) characters that readers will obsess over. But make sure you’re following me first to ensure the message goes through🫶🏼 #bookeditor #writingtips #fantasyauthor #characterdevelopment #writersofig

The most memorable characters aren’t defined by what they do—they’re defined by how they *transform*. you can have the most exciting plot in the world 🌍📚, but if your character doesn’t grow and evolve, readers won’t connect. 💔 I learned these tips from Story Genius by Lisa Cron - I can’t recommend that book enough!

A “flawed” character doesn’t mean chaotic, cruel, or impossible to root for. It means human. Here’s the simple formula I use every time: 1. Give them a flaw rooted in a wound, not randomness. Unlikable flaw: “She’s rude because… idk, vibes?” Likeable flaw: “She pushes people away because the last time she trusted someone, it blew up in her face.” Readers forgive behavior when they understand the why behind it. 2. Show competence somewhere. Your MC can be a disaster in their personal life, but give them one thing they’re genuinely good at: – their job – solving problems – loyalty – sarcasm – keeping calm in a crisis – protecting people they care about Competence = respect. 3. Let them TRY, even if they fail. Readers don’t need perfection. They need effort. Trying to communicate. Trying to be brave. Trying to heal. Trying to do the right thing and messing it up anyway. Effort creates empathy. 4. Make sure their flaw causes consequences. If the story doesn’t react to the flaw, it won’t feel real. Their avoidance should cost them something. Their anger should create a setback. Their fear should block a goal. Consequences make flaws meaningful — not annoying. 5. Give them one soft spot. One person. One thing. One moment. The jerk who melts around his little sister. The ice queen who secretly rescues stray cats. The villain who protects the MC when no one else does. Soft spots make readers lean in. Flawed + likeable isn’t complicated. It’s just: Wound → Flaw → Effort → Consequence → Soft spot. Do that, and readers will root for your MC—even when they’re a mess. ✨ Follow for more practical writing strategy.

Struggling to understand your main character? Don’t write another word until you’ve asked yourself these 6 questions! Your main character is the vessel that your reader experiences your story through, which means that you want to invest LOTS of time and attention on making sure you’re crafting them into the BEST person to tell the story you want to tell. Think of your main character as more than just some random person who’s going through a crazy experience. Your main character is a TOOL that you as the author have to use to move your story in the right direction. !! Want to go even deeper into your MC’s mind? Check out my free worksheet “Main Character Mentality” through the link in my bio !! (Some questions on this reel were inspired by Lisa Cron’s “Story Genius.” Such a good read! It takes 3 THINGS to find your character’s core: ✅ The character’s name ✅ Where they’re from ✅ Another detail/fact/attribute you already know This was the case for my character Kreios—I knew the first two and what kind of power he had BUT not how it *really* connected to him. So I took him for a walk. ☺️ This is always a fun exercise to give your character some more depth! If you want a more in-depth explanation, the first reel is pinned on my page. Or if you’ve got the hang of it, drop your process in the comments! 📝 Come on, I know you wanna talk about your work. You’re in good company here. ⚠️ Avoid introducing characters like this ⚠️ The BIGGEST mistake writers make when introducing characters is that they *tell* through info dumping rather than *showing* through action. Here are 3 ways to introduce your characters WITHOUT info-dumping: 1️⃣ Don’t list facts about your character ❌ Don’t do: “Sarah was a 28-year-old journalist with long brown hair and green eyes. She was stubborn, career-driven, and had trust issues from her parents’ divorce when she was twelve.” ✅ Instead, do: “Sarah drummed her fingers against her desk, refreshing her inbox for the tenth time. This story could make her career—if her source would just respond. She ignored her mother’s third call of the day.” 2️⃣ Show personality through action ❌ Don’t do: “James was the kind of person who always helped others. He was generous and kind, especially to animals. He volunteered at the shelter every weekend.” ✅ Instead, do: “James was already late for work when he spotted the limping dog. He sighed, checking his watch—his boss would kill him—but he was already pulling over, reaching for the emergency treats he kept in his glove compartment.” 3️⃣ Let dialogue reveal character ❌ Don’t do: “Maya was confident and outspoken. She never backed down from a challenge and always stood up for what she believed in.” ✅ Instead, do: “That’s not actually what happened,” Maya cut in, ignoring her friend’s warning look. The entire boardroom turned to stare at her. She straightened her spine. “And I have the receipts to prove it.” Remember: Your readers are smart! Let them discover who your characters are through their actions, choices, and dialogue. 💫 Want more tips for crafting memorable characters?
