ROThe Large Hadron Collider smashes particles together 40 million times per second, but engineers can only save data from roughly one in 40,000 collisions.
For decades, the filters making that decision were written by humans, programmed to recognize patterns from theories that already existed.
Anything that didn’t match a known prediction was thrown out automatically.
That’s the problem. If new physics doesn’t look like anything we’ve imagined, our own filters would delete it without ever raising a flag.
Now researchers have embedded AI directly inside the collider’s detectors.
Unlike traditional filters, these algorithms weren’t given a checklist of what to look for.
Instead, they learned what normal collisions look like and flag anything that doesn’t fit, for any reason.
They process each event in as little as 80 nanoseconds on specialized chips, fast enough to make the call before the data disappears.
The system is operational during the LHC’s current run and is already flagging unexpected events.
What those events mean remains unknown, but perhaps the next physics breakthrough is right around the corner.

This is called Lorentz contraction and Brian Cox explains it using the most perfect real world example possible. At CERN's Large Hadron Collider protons travel at 99.99999% the speed of light reducing the entire 27 kilometer ring to just 4 meters from their perspective, a contraction factor of roughly 7,000 🌀
The universe isn't just warping for these protons. It is physically compressing. The distance genuinely shrinks in the direction of travel. Not perceived. Not imagined. Measured and verified ⚙️
As Brian Cox explains this is Lorentz contraction, where space compresses in the direction of motion. A spacecraft heading to Proxima Centauri at 99% light speed would perceive the distance as far shorter than Earth observers measure 💡
Apply this to Andromeda 2.5 million light years away. At sufficient speed the distance compresses so dramatically that the journey shrinks from millions of years to potentially minutes from the traveler's perspective ☠️
The universe doesn't get smaller. You just stop giving it room to be large 🌌
INTERESTING FACT: a spacecraft traveling close to light speed could shrink the enormous distance to Andromeda making the trip seem much shorter to passengers. However due to time dilation upon return millions of years would have passed on Earth ⏳
Space isn't fixed. It bends, stretches and compresses depending entirely on how fast you move through it 👁️
