In 2025, the NSF-DOE @Rubin_Observatory hit a historic milestone, capturing its first images in just hours of test observations. Millions of galaxies and thousands of asteroids appeared in its view, previewing its upcoming 10-year survey that will collect more data in its first year than all previous observatories combined, empowering researchers and fueling discoveries about dark matter, galaxy formation and planetary defense. 📷: NSF-DOE Vera C. Australia's helping track the universe in real-time 📸 The NSF-DOE Vera C. @rubin_observatory has issued its first ~800,000 scientific alerts, finding new supernovae, feeding black holes, and Solar System objects. Rubin takes pictures of the whole southern sky every few nights from Chile, looking for changes between snapshots. Those changes, or 'transient events', are fed to data brokers like FINK, a project co-led by Australia and France. See how @swinburne's Dr Anais Möller is helping put these discoveries straight into the hands of astronomers at our link in bio.

One telescope. One night. 800,000 cosmic mysteries revealed. 📖 THE FULL STORY: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, perched atop Cerro Pachón mountain in Chile, just achieved something groundbreaking: it detected 800,000 objects of interest in a single night. These discoveries include newly spotted asteroids, supernovae (exploding stars), and other dramatic changes across the night sky. The U.S. National Science Foundation announced that Rubin is still ramping up its capabilities. Scientists predict this revolutionary instrument will eventually issue 7 million alerts every single night, connecting researchers to an unprecedented stream of real-time cosmic information. 💡 WHY IT MATTERS: This marks a fundamental shift in astronomy. Instead of passively observing the sky, we now have a tool that actively hunts for change and discovery. Every alert represents a new asteroid, a dying star, or phenomena we've never seen before. The universe is dynamic, and Rubin finally gives us the eyes to watch it unfold. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has released its first images using the world’s largest digital camera — a 3.2-gigapixel instrument built to map the dynamic universe in unprecedented detail. In just hours of early observations, the telescope captured millions of galaxies, dense star fields, and detailed views of nebulae while also identifying thousands of asteroids, including many never seen before. Over the next decade, Rubin will repeatedly scan the entire southern sky, creating a time-lapse record of cosmic change — tracking supernovae, mapping dark matter through gravitational effects, and detecting moving objects across the solar system. Each image is not just a picture, but a data-rich snapshot of cosmic evolution. When a single observatory can monitor billions of galaxies over time, discovery becomes continuous rather than occasional. What unexpected phenomena might appear when we finally watch the universe change in real time? #RubinObservatory #Astronomy #SpaceTelescope #CosmicSurvey #Galaxies #Astrophysics #SpaceDiscovery #DarkMatter

Astronomers have directly imaged a young planetary system orbiting the Sun-like star TYC 8998-760-1, about 300 light-years away in the constellation Musca. Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, scientists blocked the star’s bright light with a coronagraph — allowing faint, newly formed gas giant planets to become visible. The two confirmed planets, TYC 8998-760-1 b and c, are massive — roughly 6 and 14 times Jupiter’s mass — and orbit extremely far from their star, at about 160 and 320 astronomical units. For comparison, Neptune orbits our Sun at just 30 AU. At only about 17 million years old, this system offers a rare look at what planetary formation may have looked like in our own solar system’s infancy. Could studying these distant worlds reveal how common solar systems like ours truly are? #Exoplanets #Astronomy #EuropeanSouthernObservatory #VeryLargeTelescope #PlanetFormation #Astrophysics #SpaceDiscovery #SolarSystem

This image is a frame from a video showing changes over time in the Kepler supernova remnant, observed by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. This supernova was discovered in 1604 by Johannes Kepler, and it was the last supernova in our galaxy that could be seen with the naked eye. It is about 17,000 light-years away from Earth, and its shock wave is expanding at about 13.8 million miles per hour (around 22 million km/h). NASA used 25 years of data, from 2000 to 2025, to create a time-lapse video showing how the remnant has expanded. The difference in speed happens because the material around the remnant is not evenly spread out. #universe #space #supernova #physics #star

A new video reveals the transformation of Kepler’s Supernova Remnant, utilizing over two and a half decades of data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. Kepler’s Supernova Remnant, named for German astronomer Johannes Kepler, was initially observed in 1604. Today, we understand that a white dwarf star exploded after reaching a critical mass, either by drawing material from a companion star or merging with another white dwarf, resulting in a Type Ia supernova, which scientists use to measure the universe's expansion. Remember these images? They were the first from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and now the largest camera ever built is officially capturing images 📸 ✨ Rubin lets us see a universe that’s constantly changing. It’s so powerful it could resolve a lime from 24 km away. Every night, it will detect up to 10 million things changing, from nearby asteroids to exploding stars in distant galaxies. After 29 years in the making, the data is finally here — and it’s open. Within minutes of Rubin taking an image, you can explore it yourself through the Fink portal. No gatekeeping. No secrets. Astronomers have used the #NIRSpec on Webb to capture the first ‘vertical’ view of Uranus’s ionosphere – the upper part of the atmosphere, where it becomes ionised and interacts strongly with the planet’s magnetic field. This has revealed where Uranus’s auroras form, how the planet’s oddly tilted magnetic field shapes them, and how the atmosphere has continued to cool! 📷 @europeanspaceagency / Webb , @nasa , @canadianspaceagency , STScI, P.
