Lionel Richie first rose to fame in the 1970s with the Motown group, #Commodores, before ultimately launching a career as a solo artist, where he went on to write billboard charting hit songs, including “All Night Long”, “Dancing on the Ceiling”, “Hello”, “Stuck On You” and more. As a 4x Grammy Award winner, Lionel Richie has collaborated with some of your favorite stars including Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. And in 2017, Lionel Richie became an Honoree for the 40th annual Kennedy Center Honors. COMMODORES (LIONEL RICHIE) • THREE TIMES A LADY • 1978 “Three Times a Lady” is a 1978 song by American soul group Commodores for their album Natural High, written by lead singer Lionel Richie. It was produced by James Anthony Carmichael and Commodores. It was Commodores’ first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for two weeks on August 12, 1978, and also reached number one on the soul chart for two weeks.[6] It was the only Motown song to reach the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 that year. Lionel Richie is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with total worldwide record sales estimated at over 100 to 125 million, spanning his solo career and time with the Commodores. His 1983 album, Can’t Slow Down, is his best-seller, shifting over 20 million copies worldwide and earning Diamond status. The song was a “smash hit”which launched the Commodores into a higher level of fame and notice. In large part due to the popularity of this song, the band was named the top R&B group of the year by Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Cashbox. —————— BACKGROUND ON THE SONG TITLE At a party to celebrate his parents’ 37th wedding anniversary, Richie’s father toasted his mother, Alberta, saying “She’s a great lady, she’s a great mother, and she’s a great friend.” The toast inspired Richie to write a waltz, “Three Times a Lady”, which he dedicated to his wife, Brenda. As Richie later told Dick Clark, the toast caused him to realize, “I haven’t taken the time to tell my wife thank you. How many guys are in the same position?” Richie did not believe that a waltz would fit the Commodores’ musical style, so he wrote it imagining that it would be sung by Frank Sinatra. As the band prepared to record the album “Natural High,” the group members presented various songs that they had written. Richie played “Three Times a Lady” for producer James Carmichael, with the warning that he intended to pitch the song to Sinatra. Carmichael insisted that the song be added to the Commodores’ album. It’s about relief rather than distress, but it’s right there in the lyrics… “Girl I’m leaving you tomorrow.”  How many times did we sway back-and-forth on a date, singing this in the car? Lionel Richie, Drawing on his experience of growing up in the small Southern town of Tuskegee, Alabama, where they “roll up the sidewalk at 11:30 on Saturday night,” wrote it as a crossover in effort to nudge the Commodores closer to the pop, adult-contemporary market. Lead guitarist Thomas McClary later revealed that the lyrics were inspired by internal tensions within the band but were made more commercial by framing them within a romantic context. Recorded at Motown Studios in Hollywood, Ca., for their self-titled album, and produced by James Anthony Carmichael and the Commodores, featured were: Lionel Richie on lead vocals, keyboards and sax, Thomas McClary on lead guitar and backgrounds, Milan Williams on keyboards, Ronald LaPread on bass and backgrounds, Walter Orange on drums and backgrounds, William King on trumpet and backgrounds, and horn and string arrangements by James Anthony Carmichael.
