I LOVE the complexity approach. The trickle down effect from targeting a complex cluster means a lot of errors are likely to improve without me directly targeting them, which saves a ton of time in therapy. This approach can be difficult, especially initially, but if a child is resilient and open to feedback, they often do really well and their pronunciation improves quickly. #speechsounddisorders #childhoodapraxiaofspeech #pediatricspeech #speechpathology #speechtherapy

What does a dynamic assessment mean when talking about speech sound disorders? It means that you use cues and prompts during your initial testing to see if the child is stimulable for an error sound! Why do we want to do this?? This helps you plan therapy! There are different approaches and different theories of target selection that hinge on whether or not a child is stimulable for a sound. Using Cycles? We want to work on stimulable sounds. Thinking about a complexity approach? Consider the nonstimulable sounds first! Dynamic assessment also helps you get a feel for what cues the child is going to respond to best…so you can hit the therapy ground running. And yea - I know you can’t mess with standardized testing. But hear me out… Administer a test question. Record the child’s first response for your test scores. THEN see what else you can get the child to produce with cuing… …and make note of this in your report! So what do you think? Instead of drilling R in isolation, try backward chaining with words like: 👉 “eck” → “wreck” → “Shreck” 👉 “ed” → “red” → “shred” This taps into the complexity approach and supports coarticulation with high-value Cluster (R and SH). Yes, it’s advanced… but if your kiddo is stimulable for both, this can fast-track generalization. I’m blown away by the progress one of my kiddos has made in just 5 weeks, he’s now using all of the above sounds in *conversation* most of the time!!🌟 I chose my targets based on the complexity approach (Gierut & Hulse, 2010). This approach suggests targets should be chosen based on: 〰️Later developing sounds 〰️More complex sounds 〰️’Least knowledge’ sounds (very rarely used correctly if at all) 〰️ Non-stimulable sounds I then went with a minimal pairs approach as in my case the child was stimulable (= phonological problem not artic so we don’t do the articulation hierarchy🙅🏻‍♀️) I saw him once a week for 5 weeks and parents practised at home twice a week in between sessions and now he has most of his s-clusters, both his affricates and /s/ and /k/ (which he was previously stopping and fronting), talk about bang for your buck! 😍
