At the “catch” (starting position of the stroke), you want about 12-18 inches of space between the seat and the start of the rail. In the first clip, you’ll see the seat comes all the way up to touch my heels and my torso is also already leaned back. I can’t get any power from my torso on the “swing” and my legs are also not in a powerful position to begin driving at the start of the stroke In the second clip, I’m in a much more powerful hinge position with vertical shins, hips back, and a leaned forward torso so that I can get a good leg drive to start the stroke and then swing my torso back from there. #rowing #concept2 #fitnesstips #exercisetechnique #fitness

Is the rower a good cardio machine? Maybe. If you know what you're doing. Whenever you're putting an exercise into your program you want to ensure that it's appropriate for you at your stage of development/ability. A good rule of thumb for how to progress a program is; 1️⃣ Do you know how to perform the exercise properly? In order to get the most out of the exercise you need to understand how to perform it correctly. In the case of the rower here, poor technique means it's less effective as a tool for improving your cardiovascular fitness. The technique allows you to be in the right position, so the effort you're putting in is controlled. Once you can control/moderate your effort, you can dial it up and down to be able to train in the different zones which will actually allow you to improve your cardio. 2️⃣ Can you do more of it? Once you have the technique down, build a base of volume (say 20 ish working minutes) at moderate intensity. 3️⃣ Can you do it faster? Once you have the technique down, and the base capacity to do it for 20 total minutes in a workout, can you get more distance, more calories etc in the same 20 minutes 4️⃣ Add complexity. Once you have the technique, the capacity, and the ability to dial your effort up and down without everything falling apart, you're ready to start adding other exercises in, building more complex circuits etc. Technique, volume, intensity, complexity. Since you’re showing up every week, we know you are here for better results, amiright?! Our wish for the world is that we can all collectively improve our rowing technique. We want to see powerful, efficient strokes each time you’re on the machine. But if practice isn’t making perfect, that’s ok!
