10 Things Every Hiker Should Know About Bison 1. Bison are the largest land mammals in North America Males can weigh up to 2,000 lbs (900 kg), making them incredibly powerful despite their calm appearance. 2. They can run faster than you Bison can reach speeds of up to 35 mph (56 km/h). That’s faster than most humans. 3. They are unpredictable Even when grazing peacefully, bison can charge without warning if they feel threatened. 4. Their hump is pure muscle That large shoulder hump helps them plow through deep snow in winter to find food. 5. They have excellent hearing and smell Bison rely more on these senses than vision, which makes sudden movements risky around them. 6. They can jump surprisingly high Despite their size, bison can jump fences and obstacles over 6 feet (1.8 m). 7. They are responsible for more injuries than bears in national parks Especially in places like Yellowstone, most wildlife-related injuries involve bison. 8. Distance is everything The recommended safe distance is at least 25 yards (23 meters), but more is always better. 9. Birds often ride on them Birds like blackbirds perch on bison to eat insects off their fur. It’s a mutual benefit. 10. They look slow, but they’re not Their calm behavior can be misleading. Always respect their space. Yesterday reminded me exactly why I do this. I set out into the backcountry in rough weather, chasing the unknown—only to find traces of what once was. On my way out, I crossed paths with a fellow guide and we stood together watching the Junction Butte wolves test a few bison in Lamar Valley below. In passing, he mentioned something that stuck with me… a bison calf had been spotted. Temps were dropping, and I was ready to call it—but something told me to keep looking. After passing through Little America, I spotted a lone cow tucked into the reeds. I lifted my binos… and there it was. A tiny orange-red calf, curled up beside her. My first bison calf. Moments like this don’t happen by accident. They’re earned—through patience, awareness, and a willingness to keep going when it would be easier to stop. April 2nd is a date I won’t forget. And it’s only the beginning. 🦬🔥 Here’s to many more “little nuggets” out there. If you want to capture moments like this reach out to @yellowstone_wild, book a tour to your liking and request me! This is where the issue becomes very complex. Two things can be true at once: 🦬We want to see thousands more bison roaming the landscape and 🦬We also recognize the longstanding and intrinsic relationship between the tribes and their relatives, the Buffalo. As tribal hunters harvested some of these Buffalo, BFC field patrols noted that they left nothing behind, no waste in their taking…& their sacrifice was deeply honored by those who hunted them. Some of our crew witnessed the emotion and care that went into processing these beings - turning them into a vital food source for these individuals and their families. #yellowstone #bison #buffaloroam

A herd of about 60 bison wandered out of Yellowstone National Park this week, spending two peaceful days grazing along a well‑traveled road and bringing smiles to the local community. Word of their presence spread quickly—reaching a few hunters, who arrived and killed two members of the herd on their third day out of the park. The remaining bison turned back toward the park, eventually crossing back over Highway 191. BFC patrol was already in place, setting out our bright “Buffalo on Road” signs. Thanks to that work, the entire herd crossed safely and made their way back into the park. Locals stopped to thank the crew for the signs and for keeping both people and Buffalo safe. #bison #buffalo #protecttheherd #yellowstonenationalpark

One of the biggest bulls we've ever seen! This guy was very impressive. Bull bison in Yellowstone can tip the scales around 2,000 pounds, and I have to imagine this guy was in that ballpark. These big bulls often hang out on their own, trading in the safety in numbers of herd life in favor of a more quiet, solitary existence. When you're this big, strong, and imposing, you don't have too much to worry about from predation, so there's no need to hang out with the rest of the herd.

I photographed these Bison and their young this past spring in Yellowstone and then this past fall, and the difference a few months makes is astonishing. Life moves fast on the prairie. Bison calves are nicknamed “red dogs” because of their bright orange-red coat when they’re born in spring. It makes them easy to spot in the tall grass… and unfortunately easy for predators to spot too. So they don’t stay little for long. Within just a few months those fiery coats fade to brown, their shoulders bulk up, and the calves start keeping pace with the herd. By their first winter, they already look like miniature adults built to survive wind, snow, and wolves. Out here, growing up isn’t optional. The wild doesn’t wait.

This is a bison 🦬, or Bison bison, from the Bovidae (cattle) family. Bison means “wild ox” in Greek and it’s native to North America 🇺🇸. There are around 500,000–600,000 bison left in North America, with Yellowstone holding one of the largest free-roaming herds. 💡 Bison vs. Buffalo: 1. North American “buffalo” are actually bison; true buffalo live in Africa (Cape buffalo) and Asia (water buffalo). 2. Bison have a large shoulder hump, thick fur, and a pronounced head, while buffalo have no hump and smoother coats. 🎨 Distinctive features: 1. Adults can weigh up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs). 2. They have a thick, shaggy coat that keeps them warm in harsh winters. 3. Their massive head and hump help them push snow aside to graze. 👃 Scent and communication: 1. Bison have a keen sense of smell to find food under snow. 2. They use scent to communicate, marking territory and signaling readiness to mate. 🌲 Movement and behavior: 1. Bison are surprisingly fast: up to 35 mph (56 km/h) over short distances. 2. They can jump over fences or obstacles more than 6 feet high. 3. Yellowstone bison often travel in large herds, moving together across plains and hills. ♻️ Ecological role: 1. Their grazing patterns help maintain grassland ecosystems. 2. Wallows (mud pits they create) form small wetlands used by birds and insects. 3. They disperse seeds through their dung, helping plant growth across the park. 🐾 Travel & migration: 1. Bison roam widely within Yellowstone, sometimes moving tens of miles in a single season. 2. Herds are structured by age and sex, with dominant bulls leading during mating season. 🤔 Did you know bison were once nearly extinct in the late 1800s, with only a few hundred surviving in Yellowstone? Today, they’re a living symbol of conservation success! (This footage/photo was taken from a safe distance without disturbing the animals. Never approach wild bison — they are fast and unpredictable!) #bison #yellowstonenationalpark #animals #animallovers #wildlife
