Earth’s ocean currents 🌊 This data visualization is showing how the ocean moves water across the planet using data from NASA’s ECCO model, or Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean. The model pulls data from spacecraft, buoys, and more. Researchers rely on the model output to study ocean dynamics and to track conditions that are crucial for ecosystems and weather patterns. This Google Earth flight simulator is fully open-source. 🌍✈️ Built by a single developer, it lets you fly over real cities using real-world map data — turning the planet into a live simulation. No studio. No closed platform. No billion-dollar infrastructure. The full project can be found on my GitHub. What matters isn’t the simulator itself. It’s what it represents. Tools that once belonged to governments and Big Tech are becoming accessible to anyone who can build. The planet isn’t just being mapped anymore — it’s becoming programmable. Worth watching closely. Earth’s oceans are always in motion. 🌊 Ocean currents transport nutrients, carbon, heat, and organisms around the planet, and play a vital role in our planet’s climate. NASA’s ECCO model incorporates ocean measurements from satellites, ocean buoys, and more. This data provides a comprehensive look at ocean currents – where they flow, how fast they move, and how warm or salty the water is, among other features. The model also allows scientists to run virtual experiments that would be too expensive or impractical to perform at sea. Video description: Data from NASA’s ECCO model is shown on a spinning globe. Land masses are brown, green and white in the data visualization and the oceans are shades of blue. As the globe spins, ocean currents form swirls and spirals along the coasts and equator in several areas. Notable features are the North American Gulf Stream current around Florida and along the U.S. southeast coast, the spiraling swirls of the Agulhas current below the southern tip of Africa and across the Atlantic toward South America, and the Kuroshio Current that flows past the east coast of Japan and north toward the Arctic. Currents closer to the surface are shown in white, and deeper currents are shown in progressively darker shades of blue depending on their depth. #Earth #Ocean #Currents #DataViz #Science #Sea #NASA

Geography and data visualization collide in this viral map highlighting Wisconsin’s unique—and arguably intense—social landscape. At first glance, the heat map of "Excessive Drinking by County" across the United States looks like a typical regional study. However, as the joke points out, Wisconsin stands out so vibrantly that the state line practically disappears into a solid block of deep blue. The punchline rests on Lake Michigan; the "gap" in the data isn't a sudden shift in lifestyle, but simply a massive body of water where people (hopefully) aren't drinking. This specific graphic has become a staple in the "Terrible Maps" and geography meme communities because it illustrates how data visualization can sometimes tell a story that feels more like a caricature than a chart. While the surrounding states show a patchwork of habits, Wisconsin’s uniform shading suggests a cultural consistency that residents often lean into with a mix of pride and irony. It’s a perfect example of how a simple legend and a bit of regional context can turn a public health statistic into a comedic observation about state identity and the way we perceive borders. #Cartography #WisconsinLife #DataVisualization #MapMemes #GeographyHumor TerribleMaps

Joy Division’s striking Unknown Pleasures album cover holds a scientific mystery. The image’s true origin was lost until senior graphics editor Jen Christiansen traced it from the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy to its debut in a 1971 issue of Scientific American and then all the way to Cornell’s Rare Book Room. The computer-generated stacked plot of a famous pulsar came from a 1970 dissertation by Harold Dumont Craft Jr—who had no idea his data visualization was featured on one of rock’s classic albums. 🎤 Jen Christiansen 🎞️ Chris Schodt 📸 Jen Christiansen, Joy Division, The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy, Harold D. Laser mapping. NVIDIA compute. One massive visual moment. What you’re watching isn’t just a flashy explosion on a screen. It’s precision laser mapping paired with serious GPU power, turning the Las Vegas Sphere into a living, breathing cosmic event. 👀⚡️ First, the Sphere’s surface is mapped down to exact geometry using lasers. Every curve. Every pixel. Nothing guessed. Then NVIDIA-powered computing takes over, rendering a controlled explosion that doesn’t just blow up… it evolves — collapsing into a swirling starfield that wraps perfectly around the structure. That’s the difference now. This isn’t pre-rendered video slapped on a screen. It’s real-time, physics-aware visuals responding to an object the size of a planetarium on steroids. 🌍💥 Moments like this show where entertainment, AI, and compute are headed. Buildings aren’t just places anymore. They’re canvases. And GPUs are the paintbrush. 🎨🤖 So here’s the question… When architecture becomes programmable, what should we build next? In today’s data-driven world, data visualization makes the nitty-gritty numbers more digestible, helping illustrate essential insights to leaders, stakeholders, and team members. 🌟 Turn your raw data into meaningful visuals with tools like Power BI, Excel, Tableau, and more. Here are different types of data visuals you can create: 1️⃣ Tables: Data is shown in rows and columns, making it easily navigable and accessible. 2️⃣ Graphs: Plot data on an X and Y axis to compare your insights. 3️⃣ Gantt charts: A type of bar chart for project management that displays timelines and tasks. 4️⃣ Geospatial visualization: Data arranged on a map with shapes and colors to show trends within regions. ✨ Comment “DATA” below, and we’ll DM you some course recommendations to get you started.

Coffee with a side of the ocean, anyone? 🌊 Michelle Gierach shows us that the swirls in your coffee might look a lot like the swirls in the ocean. Known as eddies, they transport heat, nutrients, and organisms around the planet. The newly launched Sentinel-6B satellite will help us spot eddies from space and better understand ocean currents. Visual Description: The video opens with an overhead shot of creamer swirling through a cup of coffee, then transitions to a data visualization of circular currents in the ocean. Oceanographer Michelle Gierach, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, sits at a table with an oversized mug and speaks directly to the camera. Her explanation is intercut with visualizations of ocean eddies and hurricanes, along with an artist’s concept showing the Sentinel-6B satellite orbiting Earth. #Ocean #SeaLevel #NASA

This post shows how a simple data visualization can quietly tell a story. The graph tracks Jenga sales in the United States from 1990 to 2010. At first glance, it just looks like normal sales data slowly changing over time. But if you look closely, there’s a sudden drop around 2001–2002, followed by a recovery in the following years. The humor in the post comes from how the chart visually mirrors the idea of the game itself. Jenga is all about building a tower that becomes unstable and suddenly collapses. The sharp drop in the graph resembles that same moment of collapse in the game, making the data unintentionally match the theme of Jenga perfectly. This is why people say the graph has great “storytelling.” Even without words, the visual pattern makes the chart memorable and a little ironic. Moments like this show how charts and statistics can sometimes reveal funny or surprising patterns that feel almost symbolic. Posts like this often go viral because they combine data, visual storytelling, and clever observation, turning a simple graph into a moment of internet humor. #datavisualization #graphhumor #statisticsfun #internetfinds #viralreels 📊😄
