Deceleration isn’t just about slowing down, it’s a key skill for changing direction in sport Breaking it into phases lets us assess and develop each piece: braking to reduce speed safely, cutting to reverse momentum by controling shin angles, and re-accelerating to finish the movement effectively 1️⃣ ADA Test -5yd: accel 5.35 m/s², decel -5.17 m/s² -10yd: accel 5.24 m/s², decel -6.10 m/s² 2️⃣ Lateral Bound and Return velocities -L: eccentric 2.27 m/s, concentric 2.28 m/s -R: eccentric 2.20 m/s, concentric 2.33 m/s 3️⃣ Changing Direction -5-0-5: accel in 5.39 m/s², decel -7.11 m/s², accel out 5.36 m/s² -10-0-5: accel in 5.64 m/s², decel -6.14 m/s², accel out 6.40 m/s² These are examples of tests but they’re all simply modified constraints to challenge and assess the different skills discussed. Constraints can be: loads on the 1080 Sprint 2 (these were all 3kg), lead in distances, cued objectives, etc

This is high jump training…built around sprints, bounds, jumps, and classic strength work. Nothing out of the ordinary. You’ll see speed bounds, hurdle hops, single leg variations, and some basic lifting. But what stands out most to me is how many qualities are being trained at once. rhythm, timing, stiffness, coordination, deceleration, and re-acceleration. A lot of people think deceleration training is just “run and stop” drills. But deceleration happens everywhere, every landing, every bound, every step that shifts direction. Plyometrics are deceleration training. They teach the athlete how to attenuate force, organize the limbs, and re-project, all at higher speeds/forces and often unilaterally. And just like in sport, it’s not just about output. It’s about how and when you apply that output. That’s why rhythm, timing, and posture matter. That’s why these simple drills are so powerful.
