THDeflection in relationships is a defense mechanism rooted in a wound of rejection. They fear taking accountability because their self esteem cannot handle feeling shame or guilt for something they did or how they impacted their partner. So they get defensive, deflect, and shift blame with tactics such as D.A.R.V.O
D.A.R.V.O
- Deny the behavior
- Attack the accuser (their partner)
- Reverse the Victim and Offender roles
So they immediately deny or deflect the behavior their partner is discussing by bringing something else up (like something their partner may have done instead) and changing the topic at hand. They victimize themselves and shift blame onto their partner. They attack their partner by making the conversation about them and what they do or have done. This turns the table and makes the conversation about their partner and how it's their fault. This successfully reverses the victim and offender roles. Leaving their partner to feel unheard, dismissed, invalidated, and hopeless to ever having repair and reciprocal accountability.

EMSending them avoidant videos are going to make them suppress what resonates and project onto you. Sending them anxious videos is going to validate their belief you’re the broken one in the relationship. (If they’re not doing inner work). If they’re not ready to reflect, all this will do is reneforce the behavior that isn’t working. Choose to continue to work on you, because in the process you’ll either inspire them to do the work themselves and uplevel their behavior, or give you the courage to find something that does serve you.

KHEver tried to call out harmful behavior only to be met with intense denial and then be attacked and accused of something we absolutely didn’t do?
It’s a tactic meant to overwhelm our nervous systems and put us in a trauma response & was employed (subconsciously) in many of our homes growing up.
When this tactic was used on us as kiddos we may have panicked or fawned, or even begged for forgiveness - for something we didn’t even do or say. Maybe as we got older some of us fought back and were then labeled the “problem” or “oppositional.”
Sadly, it’s an effective (and intentional) strategy we are seeing on a daily basis from the current administration + internalized misogyny sprinkled in. 🎊
