WHAT HAPPENED TO FRED? ‼️⬇️ @fred_petat is a French freediving athlete. He was competing at a freediving pool competition and attempting to swim underwater as far as he could while holding his breath. 🧜🏻‍♂️ But when the oxygen levels in his body became dangerously low, he blacked out and went unconscious. This was his brain's way of conserving the last of his oxygen and protecting vital organs. 🫁🤯 The safety team quickly pulled Fred to the surface, removed his goggles and nose clip, and began blowing air on his face while tapping him and telling him to breath. This is standard rescue procedure for a freediving blackout. 🚑 After a few seconds Fred regained consciousness, started breathing on his own, and signalled that he was okay. 👌🏻 Remember, always dive within your limits and NEVER DIVE ALONE! #freediving #freediverlife #extremesports #diving #athlete #athletelife #poolcompetition #competiton #divedeeper #holdyourbreath #breathhold #accident #challengeyourself #rescue #safetyfirst #pushthelimits #blackout #freedivingblackout #freediver #unconscious #drowning #sportsfails #swimming #closecall #areyouokay #imokay #breathe #freedive

Panic underwater is one of the most underestimated dangers in diving. In seconds, fear can override training. In this case, a diver spat out her regulator at 15 meters, triggering a panic response. What followed wasn’t equipment failure, it was loss of breathing control. Ascending too quickly from 15 meters (≈50 ft) is dangerous and can be fatal, the ocean doesn’t forgive rushed decisions. How to reduce the risk: • Practice regulator recovery until it’s automatic • Slow your breathing, panic feeds on rapid breaths • Stop, signal, think, act • Dive within your limits and abort early if anxiety appears • Stay close to your buddy at all times Most diving fatalities aren’t caused by depth, they’re caused by panic. Respect the ocean. Respect your limits. 🎥Credit: “Scuba Diver Panic” by ofalador (Youtube Channel) #diving #ocean #odd #dark

Does it get any closer than that? 👀 This clip from @es_dons provides a good opportunity to reflect on boating & diving safety - it’s far too easy for a wonderful day on the water to turn into a life-changing tragedy. See his write up below 👇 ••• From: @es_dons ••• There’s been a few shots captured over the years that I never want to capture again, this is top of that list. In the moment I kinda laughed it off, said “that was a close one” and forgot about it but when I look back at these video I can’t help but contemplate how fortunate I am to brush so close to serious injury or death. I was so focused on the shot I didn’t even realize what was happening and by the time I reacted it was already over, this was the last thing on my mind when swimming around exploring this underwater shipwreck. I dove about 30 feet down and started a slow ascent filming this eerie wooden shipwreck in the distance. Had I come up a split second faster there’d be a different story to tell. Thanks @willcarmack for capturing the BTS it was scarier for him than it was for me because he watched it happen helplessly and thought I got hit. Appreciate life because freak accidents can happen at any time 😳🙏
