It's about becoming a scholar. An independent thinker. Someone who can conduct research, ask good questions, and make informed decisions. Few people change the world with their dissertation. And honestly? Many academics will tell you their dissertation was some of the weakest research they've ever done. But it proved they could do it. That they'd been transformed into a scholar. And really, it's your first time doing real research. Why would it be your best work? Was it because you liked your research topic, research in general, or some form of teaching? Then think of careers outside academia that will simulate the same kind of work. - diversify your skill set while you are getting your PhD: look for ways to apply your research outside academia or get skills that will help your research but also build skills that will allow you to find work outside academia - think of your research as public-facing: build a side project or a dissertation component that is public-oriented. This will allow you to transfer that particular aspect of your research into public humanities or other communication-based fields. Have tips for folks trying to use their PhD outside academia? One question we asked was… What are some things that your PhD students do that can create difficulties for you? Some of the responses included… 🍂 Not keeping in regular contact and disappearing for long periods of time, sometimes for months. This can lead to a complex and difficult dynamic where the supervisor is left worried about the students’ wellbeing and trying to chase them for a meeting. 🍂 When students lack confidence in themselves and as a result avoid asking questions when needed, which can result in poor communication and the supervisor struggling to manage the students’ needs. 🍂 When students don’t give their supervisor any/enough notice before sending them their work for feedback. There’s a lot of myth regarding doing a PhD from USA and the associated pros and cons of it. Let’s focus on the brighter sides of it today. These are some of the pros of getting a PhD from USA: 1. 100% Tuition waiver (that huge amount of money that people usually pay in USA or other foreign countries is totally waived) 2. Timely credit of the stipend (possibly trivial for people from other countries, but I personally many people in India who, in their late 20s or early 30s don’t get stipend in a timely manner. Moreover, at most places in USA this usually covers all the expenses and might also result in some savings) 3. Rigorous practical training (it takes a longer time to get a PhD from USA as the standards are pretty high and the degree will require you to perform a number of challenging tasks successfully before you are finally awarded) 4. Significant job opportunities (although the market right now is pretty tough, but for most fields there are significant number of high paying job opportunities and also a lot of postdoctoral positions) In conclusion, I would say professionally you can excel a lot in USA during and after a PhD.
