Dogs use touch as a form of communication, and pawing is one of those signals that can mean “pay attention to me” or “keep doing that.” Your dog may have picked it up as an attention-seeking button because they learned that pawing at you makes you give them attention 🥺
Here is a scientific aspect: there’s even a puppy-rooted reason for it: puppies paw at their mother while nursing, so using their paws to ask for something is a behavior that starts early and can stick around as they grow.
Sometimes it’s not an attention request, it is just checking in (my dog does this 🥺). In dog language, it can mean “You’re my person.” As with all my posts, there are clues and the best clue is the rest of their body: if they’re relaxed and soft-faced, it’s usually friendly and affiliative; if they look tense or uneasy, it might be stress or uncertainty.
