We all grew up thinking dolphins sounded one way… The classic, audio bit we heard on TV? Fun fact: it often wasn’t even a real dolphin! In many older productions, the iconic “dolphin” sound was actually created using manipulated bird calls to make it more dramatic and consistent on screen. But real dolphins are far more dynamic. They use clicks to echolocate, signature whistles that function like names, and a wide range of buzzes and burst pulses that reveal just how complex their communication truly is. #dolphin #dolphinlove #dolphinsounds #animalcommunication #themoreyouknow

Can you hear those sharp clicking sounds? Bottlenose dolphins use echolocation by sending rapid, high-frequency pulses that bounce off objects like fish and the sandy seafloor, helping them create a detailed acoustic map of their surroundings. In the Bahamas, they use this skill to crater feed, locating fish buried beneath the sand and diving nose-first to flush them out. The circular craters they leave behind linger for hours, like underwater footprints. It’s a clever technique, passed down through generations, that showcases how dolphins adapt their environments and rely on complex social learning to thrive in the wild. Video by @PaulNicklen / I encountered this crater-feeding bottlenose dolphin on a recent dive in the Bahamas. The technique is named for the cavities left scattered across the ocean floor, as though it were some distant moon. After using echolocation to spot fish hiding deep in the soft sand, the dolphins dive in with their snouts, sometimes down to their pectoral fins, before wriggling back out moments later with their catch. Follow @PaulNicklen, where I reveal more secrets of life beneath the tropical waves and speak out against the industries that threaten them. #Dolphin #BottlenoseDolphin #Bahamas #TheBahamas #CraterFeeding

One of the advantages of spending weeks at sea and diving nearly every day is getting to see new sides to familiar wildlife. Just off the shores of The Bahamas, our team came across this bottlenose dolphin crater feeding, a hunting strategy named for the cavities left scattered across the ocean floor. After using echolocation to spot fish hiding deep in the soft sand, the dolphins dive in with their snouts, sometimes down to their pectoral fins, before wriggling back out moments later with their catch. Currently @Mitty and I are preparing to return to life aboard the SeaLegacy 1 and get back to working directly on the conservation front lines — starting in New Zealand. Just hanging with the smartest, Graceful and playful creatures in the sea 🐬✨. 🎥 @scuba.earth & @im.a.sea Here’s some interesting information about dolphins. 👇🏻 1️⃣ Species Diversity: There are about 40 species of dolphins, ranging from the tiny Maui’s dolphin (about 4 feet long) to the massive orca (killer whale), which is technically a dolphin. 2️⃣ Intelligence: Dolphins are highly intelligent and are known for their complex social structures, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn and mimic behaviors. 3️⃣ Communication: They use a combination of clicks, whistles, and body language to communicate with one another. Each dolphin has a unique whistle, like a name, to identify itself. 4️⃣ Echolocation: Dolphins use echolocation to navigate and hunt. They emit sound waves that bounce off objects, helping them “see” underwater. 5️⃣ Social Creatures: Dolphins live in groups called pods, which can consist of a few individuals or hundreds. They often work together for hunting and protection. 6️⃣Diet: Most dolphins are carnivorous, eating fish, squid, and crustaceans. Some larger species, like orcas, may also hunt seals and other marine mammals. 7️⃣Breathing: Dolphins are mammals, so they need to breathe air. They surface every few minutes to inhale through their blowholes. 8️⃣ Speed and Agility: Dolphins are fast swimmers, reaching speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h). Their streamlined bodies and strong tails make them excellent at navigating the water. 9️⃣ Lifespan: Depending on the species, dolphins can live between 20 and 60 years in the wild. 🔟 Threats: Dolphins face threats like habitat loss, pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, and hunting in some regions. There’s so much to love about dolphins! The more we learn about them, the more reasons we find to marvel at one of the world’s most intelligent animals. Researchers often describe intelligence as a mix of perception, communication, and problem-solving — and dolphins excel at all three. Starting with echolocation, dolphins send out a series of clicks, allowing them to “see” in the dark ocean, finding prey and navigating with astonishing precision. Their echolocation is so powerful that they can even detect a piece of metal inside the human body! Their communication is equally fascinating. Each dolphin has a unique signature whistle, like a name. They also use clicks, squeaks, and body language to socialize and coordinate hunts. Scientists are still piecing together the full picture, but many believe this “dolphin language” may not be so different from our own. And even without hands, dolphins can use tools. Some carry sponges on their noses to protect themselves while foraging along rocky seafloors. What’s your favourite dolphin fact? Follow (us) @InsideHistory to learn something NEW everyday 🧠💫 Dolphin sound frequencies, particularly their ultrasonic echolocation clicks ranging from about 2,000 Hz up to 100,000 Hz, are believed to have potential therapeutic effects for children with cerebral palsy! These high-frequency sounds can create gentle vibrations that may influence brain activity by promoting relaxation and improving neural synchronization between brain hemispheres. This process, similar to vibroacoustic therapy, might help reduce muscle stiffness and enhance motor control. Additionally, dolphin-assisted therapy combines these sound frequencies with tactile and emotional stimulation, which can reduce anxiety and increase engagement in rehabilitation. #wildlife #dolphins #history #reels #science
