Aloha gang! Hope you all are having a beautiful week as we head into the weekend and CHRISTMAS next week ♥️
This week wanted to share a video from my gig last week in Lāna‘i at the Four Seasons to help kick off Festive 2024.
These songs are part of a longer medley I do at my solo gigs that I call my “Manu Mele Medley.” A medley that consists of songs recorded by two of my heroes, @kainanimusic & Teresa Bright.
Not to take anything away from these women when it comes to their own illustrious careers and the impact they have both made in Hawaiian music, but they both share a common thread for me that has been paramount in the way that I interpret and perform Mele Hawai‘i for myself and at gigs.
Through their recordings, They both share their love, passion, knowledge and respect for the art of traditional Hawaiian music yet offering it in various musical genres and motifs that showcase the different styles that inspire their own artistry.
Even when it comes down to their tone and timbre, I find they often echo each other. It was tragic that we unfortunately lost Aunty Teresa this year, though her music and impact will FOREVER live on, and I’ve always felt that when I first heard tita Kainani, and again, not to take anything away from her own talent and artistry or to say that this is even a big part of the “equation”, but along with the inspiration from her own mother, Lady Ipo Kahaunaele, I feel that Kainani is one of the few people today that carries on the sound that Aunty Teresa’s impact has made on Hawaiian music, and I don’t think Kainani would be offended by me saying that.
In my own artistry, while mele Hawai‘i flows through my blood, I also struggle with the pressure, influence, responsibility and sanctity of keeping Hawaiian music traditional, yet still wanting to use the different genres that shape me as a singer and applying that to Hawaiian music in a respectful way, namely my love for R&B/Soul/Gospel music…(caption continued in comments)
