It works on a small scale. But there is a reason you do not see this in your neighborhood yet. Physics gets in the way. Melting ice takes a massive amount of energy. To clear a long stretch of the power grid, a drone would need to land and refuel dozens of times. It is slow. It is expensive. And it is dangerous. Fire turns the air into plasma. Plasma conducts electricity. If that flame touches a high-voltage line while the power is on, it creates a bridge for the current. The result is a dangerous arc flash. That explosion would destroy the drone technology. It could melt the aluminum wires. It creates a total disaster. We need a fix that works much faster. Real innovation focuses on scale. We are moving toward smart grids that defend themselves. Electrical engineering is shifting toward prevention rather than reaction. New technologies allow cables to detect ice buildup and melt it with internal pulses of electricity. We are seeing autonomous robots that roll permanently on the lines.
