I had a voice that could fill a concert hall without a microphone. I got to travel to many places. Sing in front of many strangers. Memorized arias in four languages. Done things on stage that took years of real courage. And I could not walk into a school pickup line without wanting to disappear. The entertainment world is brutal about bodies. Years in that industry did something to how I saw myself that took a long time to undo. And then the weight came, and the pain came, and the confidence I used to perform with just quietly left. I’m 38 now. Still on this road. Still 37 lbs from my goal. But I feel like me again for the first time since I was 28. Not because I hit a number. Because I finally stopped punishing my body and started actually supporting it. Confidence isn’t a number on a scale. But it’s really hard to feel like yourself when your body is fighting you at every turn. If you’ve been hiding too — I see you. Truly. And if this resonated - follow along. Most singers work really hard on technique. And still feel stuck, with tight voices and struggling high notes. Here's why. ⤵️ Your voice doesn't live in a vacuum. It lives in your body, shocker right.. And your body holds tension, from nerves, from pushing, from life. That tension sits in your muscles and it physically gets in the way of how you sing. No vocal exercise will fix that. So before we talk about technique, we need to talk about release. One of the best places to start to release is with the SCM (sternocleidomastoid) the muscle that runs down the side of your neck. Singers overuse it constantly without realising. When it's tight, everything from your jaw to your breath feels harder than it should. I have a video on my page showing you exactly how to release it. Go find it, its part 1 of the vocal release series. Hunger cues can become quieter, metabolism may slow down, and the body shifts into a type of energy conservation mode to protect itself. 🔋 Think of it like your phone switching to low power mode when the battery is running low. Your body does something very similar when it senses that fuel is inconsistent or insufficient. The absence of hunger does not always mean the body is adequately nourished. Sometimes it simply means the body has adapted to prolonged underfueling. Hunger is not a weakness. Hunger is not something to ignore. Hunger is a signal that the body is asking for care. 💛 During National Nutrition Month, this is an important reminder: nourishment is not about restriction or discipline.
