After 15 years teaching elementary art, you learn a lot of life lessons. Some for the better and some for the worse 🙃 Here are 5 pieces of advice I would give to a new art teacher: 🎨 It’s ok to slow down. In the early days of my teaching career, I always felt this pressure too go go go. To add pressure to my students to finish the project so we could start the next one. Now was this pressure external? Not necessarily… It was probably more of pressure I was putting on myself, when in reality my teaching style has always been more about quality over quantity. Listen to your intuition, follow your students cues, and create a pace that works for everyone. 🎨How to respectfully say no. Ooof 🥴 File this piece of advice as the number one thing I wish I would have known when I started. As somebody who is working on being a recovering people pleaser, this was a major struggle in my early years of teaching. Certainly help when you can but also set clear boundaries (i have a whole blog on this topic) 🎨 Shadow your colleagues. This is some of the best PD you will ever get! Observe other art teachers in your district but also ask to observe classroom teachers or other specials teachers. It’s amazing what you can learn from someone else just by observing their class. 🎨 Don’t fall into the us vs them mindset For whatever reason, there seems to be this classroom vs special area teacher mindset in a lot of schools. Don’t fall into that trap of negativity. First- Always put yourself in someone else’s shoes before assuming the worst. Second- collaboration over competition all day. Build relationships with classroom teachers and offer to collaborate or ask how you can support their students in your class as well. This was the best part about working at a creative arts school- the magical collaboration aspect of specials teachers and classroom teachers working together to best support our students. 🎨 Your gifts are meant to be shared.
