🧠 Executive Functioning 101 Think of it as your brain’s “control center” — helping you plan, organize, remember, regulate, and get things done. But when those skills are delayed or challenged? 💥 It’s not laziness. It’s not defiance. It’s a signal that support is needed — not shame. 📊 This infographic breaks down: ✅ What executive functioning skills are ⚠️ What the struggles look like 🛠️ And most importantly… the tools that help. ✨ Let’s support brains that think differently. Save this. Share it. Post it in your classroom or clinic. Every child deserves the tools that meet their brain’s needs. #ExecutiveFunctioning #NeurodivergentSupport #ThriveCommunityWorks #ADHDAwareness #BehaviorIsCommunication #EmotionalRegulation #ChildDevelopment #ToolsNotTantrums #InclusiveEducation #SupportDon’tShame #MentalHealthMatters

The concept of behavior momentum can be applied to both animals and humans. I have personally found it really helpful in being able to complete chores around the house. It’s easier to keep going if you’ve already started, and it’s easier to start with…something easy! 😁 . #autism #autisticadult #brainhacking #autistic #specialeducation #teacher #behavior #appliedbehavioranalysis #aba #advice #adhd #executivefunctioning #procrastination

Someone asked if there are ways to improve your executive function if you grew up in poverty or experienced other kinds of trauma or discrimination. YES! These are free or as close to free as possible, and only require a few minutes on google to get 1,000,000 ideas. None of these are quick fixes, they require both commitment and self-compassion (for when you miss a day, feel like you screwed up, etc.) Be kind to yourself! You’re doing the best you can. ♥️ #socialjustice #antiracism #endpoverty #publichealth #executivefunction

Which executive functioning skill do you struggle most with? For me it’s that shower with a hair wash. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a good shower, it’s just all of the steps around it that make it seem like SUCH a chore. ADHD often brings along a disruptive force called executive dysfunction, which hampers our ability to plan, organize, and initiate tasks. So, when it comes to something as seemingly simple as showering, executive dysfunction delights in throwing obstacles our way. Distractions become irresistible temptations, diverting our attention from the bathroom and into the abyss of our racing thoughts. Time seems to warp, transforming minutes into seemingly endless hours as we succumb to procrastination. The mere thought of starting a task can trigger a surge of overwhelming emotions, often leading us to avoid it altogether. #executivedysfunction #adhd #audhd #asd #autism #neurodivergent #mentalhealthawareness

Did you know your child’s brain is still under construction? The part of the brain responsible for executive functioning—the ability to plan, organize, manage emotions, and follow through—won’t fully develop until their mid-20s. This means you are their external executive functioning system right now. You’re their planner, their guide, their coach. And that’s okay! They need you to model these skills and provide structure as their brain grows. It’s not that they won’t do something—it’s often that they can’t yet. Keep guiding them with patience. You’re building skills that will last a lifetime. If you “do your best work” the night before it’s due, you’re not imagining it. Deadlines create urgency. Urgency increases adrenaline and dopamine. And that surge can flip your brain into hyperfocus mode. 🔥 The problem? It’s a short-term strategy. Living off last-minute pressure isn’t sustainable, increases burnout, and doesn’t help with the everyday, non-urgent tasks that actually make up most of life. In executive functioning work, the goal isn’t to eliminate motivation — it’s to stop relying on crisis to create it. Instead of urgency, we build structure. Instead of dopamine spikes, we aim for steadier dopamine support. 🧠 That’s how you improve consistency without running on stress. More coming in this series on how to actually do that. #ExecutiveFunctioning #ADHDeducation #Productivity #MentalHealthMatters #Psychiatry

TIPS HERE: One of the biggest things I struggle with because of ADHD is executive dysfunction. I know I am not alone with this as executive dysfunction is a common challenge among those with ADHD. If you don’t already know, executive dysfunction disrupts the brain’s ability to regulate and manage higher-level functions. Sometimes it feels like what I said in this video, the desire to do things but feeling stuck. For years I thought it was laziness & a lack of motivation but it’s not. People who struggle with this often: - have time blindness - have a hard time organizing their thoughts & actions - struggle to start projects or complete projects - feel unproductive - procrastinate - forget things easily - dissociate - struggle with mood Note: this does not just apply to ADHD , but can also occur in other neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders. Here are some tips I have been implementing to help myself & my clients: 1. Break all your tasks into smaller tasks. When I say small, I truly mean small such 5-10 minutes. Larger tasks overwhelm us, we need to make them seem more manageable. 2. Set visual reminders! Put sticky notes around, write things down on paper or even use the background of your home screen to remind you what you need to be done 3. Recently, we had @nasneuro on our podcast who gave the amazing suggestion of doing the most difficult or dreadful task first. Once you get this out of the way, the motivation will follow 4. Establish routines. I know, this is a common suggestion for ADHD but it’s for a reason. Having a consistent schedule can help reduce decision-making fatigue and increase productivity. 5. Have an accountability partner where you both check in one one another and hold each other accountable. This will help you have more of a reason to complete your tasks 6. Make sure your basics are taken care of. Ensure you’re sleeping, eating & moving your body! 💬Comment “BALANCE” for my program that help more than 1000 families in just 14 dollars Balance activities to improve executive functioning? Sounds a bit ‘out there,’ but stick with me! 🧠⚖️ Dr. Jeremy Schmahmann, a Harvard neurologist, uncovered a fascinating connection: the cerebellum—known for managing physical balance—also helps regulate emotional equilibrium. He explains, ‘The cerebellum regulates the speed, capacity, consistency, and appropriateness of cognitive and emotional processes.’ Even though it takes up just 10% of brain volume, the cerebellum contains nearly 75% of our brain cells and is the most adaptable part of the brain. By engaging in balance exercises, we’re essentially taking our cerebellum to the gym. This ‘workout’ helps stabilize our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, reducing erratic swings and promoting mental and emotional harmony. While more research is needed on this topic, balance activities are a non-invasive, zero-cost way to potentially improve your child’s executive functioning skills—and they come with plenty of other benefits like increased vestibular input which is a powerhouse for sensory regulation!
