DAFrom Missionary to My True Mission 🥹
What a journey it’s been. Once upon a time, I was a Mormon missionary, white shirt, tie, a backpack full of scriptures, and a heart full of hope that I was doing exactly what God asked of me. I knocked doors, bore testimony, and prayed for answers. But beneath the surface, there was always another prayer I wasn’t saying out loud: “Can I ever truly be myself and still be loved?”
Fast forward, and here I stand today, an openly gay man, a husband, and a dad to the three most beautiful little souls. My life didn’t follow the script I was handed, and thank God for that. Instead, I’ve written my own: one filled with authenticity, courage, and a family built on nothing but love.
Some might see these two photos as opposites, missionary to gay dad. But to me, they’re chapters of the same story. One taught me discipline, resilience, and determination. The other is teaching me joy, vulnerability, and what unconditional love really looks like.
This isn’t about rejecting where I came from. It’s about honoring it, while also embracing where I was always meant to be. My truest mission turned out not to be saving others, but expanding my own heart enough to love fully, freely, and without shame.
So here’s to every LGBTQ+ person who ever wondered if they could have it all, family, fulfillment, and a life that feels like your own. The answer is yes. Maybe not in the way you were taught, but in the way your soul has always known.

* I have an extremely hard time going to second hour. With my ADHD I’ve never been one to enjoy sitting still for long periods of time. After a bad experience with a lesson I had a while back (it’s the people not the doctrine) I have a hard time getting myself to go and enjoy it. I tend to skip second hour. I am trying to stop but it’s hard to find enjoyment in it.

* ��I strongly believe God has bigger problems than Tattoos. Temples are beautiful buildings with art. I strongly believe that as long as the tattoo of your choice isn’t offensive, hateful or blasphemous GOD DOESNT CARE. Permanent art on a temporary vessel as I always say.

* ��I have terrible language. I got in the habit of cussing like a sailor. As I grow closer to God I am trying to replace and clean up my language. I know I’m still a candidate for the Celestial Kingdom even with bad language. However I do believe that clean language is respectful to God and he does appreciate and value my effort.

* ��Many of us grew up in households that taught us never to question but I always encourage people to pray for a testimony of the restoration of the gospel no matter the state of your faith. Asking God those questions help strengthen our foundation and relationship with him. If I had not been pushed to ask these questions my testimony would NOT be what it is today.

* •I drink kombucha even though it contains green tea. I am missing a CHUNK of my digestive organs and l’ve noticed that as I drink it l’ve started to digest like a normal person. I do believe every case is different and sometimes with the guidance of your bishop it’s ok to not fully follow the Word of Wisdom for health reasons. Everyone should to their full ability but in some cases breaking a rule will help more than hurt.

DEAfter 27 years of being devoutly Mormon—attending BYU, getting married in the Mormon Temple—I left the Church because of one line in our most sacred ceremony.
The Temple is everything in Mormonism. You follow every rule for a year—no coffee, no alcohol, tithing, interviews with male leaders—just to be allowed in. I went weekly after my divorce for comfort. It’s only for CARD CARRYING ultra Mormons. And it’s sacred, so you’re NEVER supposed to discuss what happens inside.
But. one line haunted me:
“Eve, if you will covenant to obey the law of the Lord, and to hearken to the counsel of your husband as he hearkens to the Father…”
I asked again and again—am I hearing this right? Do I really need to go through my (then, ex-husband) to reach God?
It was part of the covenant women were asked to make. The implication was a hierarchical structure:
God → Husband → Wife.
Apparently this line was debated in the Church for years. But I kept hearing it. And one day, it shattered everything.
Because no community I participated in would make a woman spiritually secondary to a man.
But…the truth is, I never fully believed. As I write in my book:
“Are we all just pretending in exchange for the community of really nice people?”
Eventually, I stopped pretending. I left. I started over.
The irony? They’ve since REMOVED the sentence 😅 I guess my instincts were right ❤️

This is really based off the comment/claim I’ve seen several times where they’ll say, something to the effect of, “the church taught me to be this judgy/this way/etc. why would I change when I left?”
Which has layers— but the center is empty. The gospel never teaches us to shame, judge, or belittle. That wasn’t the church, that’s just you.

AUI can’t leave the LDS church and here’s why👇🏽
1️⃣ My family
I grew up in the church and all of my extended family did too. To leave the church would leave behind a major cultural pillar of my family..it would also take away my children’s ability to be raised in the gospel
2️⃣ Hell
I’d have to believe that God created people with the intention of sending them to Hell. LDS theology has a much better answer
3️⃣ Miracles, Gifts of the Spirit
Leaving the church would mean seeing less miracles and gifts of the spirit which have BLESSED my life immensely
4️⃣ God
Heavenly Father has shown me TOO MUCH to leave His church. I’ve been given spiritual witness of the truthfulness of His gospel and to abandon that would be abandoning Him
5️⃣ It’s true!
I’d have to give up the rights to the priesthood, holy scriptures, saving ordinances, and everything that comes with Jesus’s restored church. I can’t leave something knowing it’s true!
I’m here to stay and so should you 🙏🏽

KEat one point i knew the church was true. i loved Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. i had a deep knowledge + testimony of the gospel and it motivated everything i did in my life.
i understand that it challenges your faith when someone like me says it’s possible to be a fully committed, converted disciple of Christ and then to change, choose an entirely different path and be much happier, but that is my truth 🫶🏼
