Do you agree? My friend Danielle told me about this really beautiful tool: a scoreboard for emotional capacity. Each morning, you and your partner check in — just a simple number from 1 to 10. 1 means: “I’m at my limit. I need care, patience, and space.” 10 means: “I’ve got you. I’ve got me. Let’s go.” Whoever scores lower that day gets to be supported. No questions, no guilt. It’s such a gentle way to remind each other: we’re not in a power struggle — we’re a team. Jaggie vs the world. Jacob and I are so different. I’m an introvert. I recharge alone. He’s an extrovert aka he recharges through people. I process things by talking about them. He holds it in. We both have strengths. We both have shadows. And instead of always guessing who’s “doing better” or trying to win the invisible competition of who’s more tired, we just check in with a number. It’s honest. It’s clear. It keeps us on the same team. Because being in a relationship doesn’t mean one person is always the rock and the other is always the storm. We take turns. And that’s what makes us solid.
