Fevers aren’t the problem, they’re part of the solution. 🌡️ A fever is the body turning up the heat to support the immune system and fight what doesn’t belong. Instead of immediately suppressing it, Barbara reminds us to support the body with proper hydration and gentle, tepid baths until the fever passes naturally. Healing happens when we work with the body, not against it. #naturalhealing #fevers #hydration #water #immunesupport #holistichealth #healthiswealth #wellness #naturalremedies #didyouknow #barbaraoneill #thehealthyyhabitat #reels

Fevers can be scary for parents, but it’s more important to focus on how the child looks than the number on the thermometer (as long as they aren’t in a high risk group). Make sure to encourage fluids and medicate them if they are uncomfortable. We’re happy to see them in the ER if they aren’t doing well! #fever #parents #sick #kids #emergency Disclaimer: For educational and entertainment purposes only and should not be regarded as medical advice or replace the advice of your physician

Here’s how I use these herbs in real life at home: Elderflower — For fevers, colds, and sinus congestion. Make a hot tea at the first sign of illness to encourage gentle sweating and circulation. Thyme — For coughs, chest tightness, and infections. Simmer into a strong tea with honey for respiratory support. Sage — For sore throats and hormonal balance. Gargle a warm infusion for throat pain, or sip during hormonal shifts. Tulsi — For stress, burnout, and adrenal support. Drink daily as a nourishing tea to steady the nervous system. Echinacea — For immune defense. Use as a short-term tea or tincture at the very first symptom. Catnip — For tension, sleep issues, and children’s fevers. Prepare as a gentle bedtime tea to calm the body. Oregano — For microbial support. Use as a strong tea or infused oil for immune strength. Yarrow — For wounds, fevers, and inflammation. Apply powdered leaves to minor cuts or drink as tea for fevers. Comfrey — For tissue and skin repair. Use externally as infused oil or salve for sprains and slow-healing skin. Lemon balm — For anxiety, digestion, and viral support. Sip throughout the day to calm and uplift. Plantain — For bites, stings, and rashes. Chew fresh leaves and apply as a quick poultice, or use infused oil. Garlic — For immunity and circulation. Crush raw into honey or soup for daily protection. Aloe — For burns, rashes, and gut irritation. Apply fresh gel to skin or use small amounts internally when appropriate. Hyssop — For lungs and congestion. Brew as tea during coughs and respiratory infections. You don’t need to know everything. You just need to start. Save this for sick days. Share it with a friend who wants real skills. And remember: your kitchen is powerful.

Meet Kian, a fun-loving, energetic kid who adores his 3 brothers and loves #Legos, speed skating, trail running, and rock climbing. In spring 2023, after 2 weeks of tummy pain and daily fevers, Kian was hospitalized and diagnosed with B-cell ALL on June 9. 💔 He began treatment just days later and faced long hospital stays, infections, and transfusions — all without losing his spark. Now in remission after completing treatment on August 25, 2025, Kian is Mickey Mouse–obsessed, thriving in senior kindergarten, helping others through their nonprofit @tubietough by making tubie bags, and showing just how strong kids can be. Lemon compress for lowering fevers. You all know my stance on fevers but if you find yourself on the brink of giving a fever reducer then this is worth a shot. What you’ll need: 2 lemons Thin cloth large enough to cover the calves A medium sized bowl Soak the cloth with the juice in the bowl. Squeeze out any excess juice or add more if needed. You can always add a little apple cider vinegar if you don’t have enough lemon juice. Apply to the calves, covering the entire lower leg between the Achilles and the knee. You can also apply to forehead. Leave for 20 min and you should notice the temp starting to come down. You can repeat again if necessary. This is best done on child that feels hot all over. If they feel chilled or their legs and feet are cold, this method is not recommended. Lemon compress conducts excess heat from the head to the legs providing relief so your child can sleep. As always, consult your doctor.

➡️ Appetite will be trash and that’s normal. Flu can zap appetite and energy for up to 10–14 days. That is typical. Your child does not need to “eat to get better.” They need fluids. Food will come back. ➡️ Fevers lasting 6–7 days can be expected with flu. I’m less alarmed by a steady fever than I am by a fever that: ‼️improves after day 4–5 ➡️ disappears ➡️ then comes BACK That pattern raises concern for secondary infection. ➡️ Week ONE is about hydration + fever control. Period. Miss those two things and you land in the ER. Not eating ≠ emergency Not drinking / not peeing / uncontrolled fevers = emergency ➡️ Week TWO is about watching for complications. Secondary infections after flu can be sneaky and dangerous: ➡️ pneumonia ➡️ ear infections ➡️ sinus infections ➡️ worsening weakness or breathing This is when kids often look “off” again. ➡️ Saline + suction is not optional for babies & toddlers. It is the mainstay of treating viral respiratory infections. Clear the nose = easier breathing, feeding, sleeping. ➡️ Don’t let flu fevers ride. These fevers are often not comfortable unless treated. Fever meds are for comfort and hydration support. Anything > 102 needs meds. ➡️ Sending kids back too early spreads illness. Returning to school before at least day 5 from symptom onset is almost guaranteed to spread flu to others and prolong outbreaks. ➡️ Sugar matters when kids are sick. Sugar helps with energy and absorption. Replacing lost sugar is important — diluted juice, electrolyte drinks, popsicles are all fair game. This is not the time to be strict. ‼️ Bottom line: Flu care isn’t about perfection. It’s about hydration, fever control, airway clearance, and knowing what phase you’re in. Fever isn’t the enemy, it’s your child’s immune system doing its job. Not every fever needs to be treated. Febrile seizures happen in about 4% of children, and it’s the child’s predisposition that determines risk, not how high the fever climbs. Routine illness related fevers do not “fry the brain.” Let’s stop fearing the number and start understanding what it actually means. Pediatric fever myth resources from major children’s hospitals: 1. Most kids are now back to school, kinder and daycare and for many families, that also means the start of sick season 🤧 Runny noses. Coughs. Fevers. Gastro. When kids mix, germs spread. What’s often most stressful isn’t the illness itself, it’s not knowing: • What you can manage at home • When to worry • When to keep your child home or see a doctor That’s exactly why I wrote Dr Golly’s Guide to Family Illness. It walks you through: ✔ Common childhood illnesses ✔ What you can safely manage at home ✔ Red flags to watch for ✔ When it’s time to see your GP or head to hospital It’s calm, practical, evidence-based advice right there when you need it. If your child is heading back to care or school, being prepared now can save you a lot of late-night Googling and doomscrolling. 👉 Linked in my bio. #drgolly #paediatrician #backtoschool #sickseason #parentingtips

Anyone else wash their hands every 5 seconds while cooking? Or just me? 🙋‍♀️ Not washing your hands after handling raw meat (especially chicken) is pretty foul. 🐔 Bacteria like salmonella and campylobacter can spread fast, from the meat to your hands and straight to food poisoning. Think vomiting, diarrhoea, fevers, stomach cramps. It’s giving ick AND sick. 🤮 Do yourself a favour—wash your hands with warm, soapy water every time you touch raw meat! 🧼 Video: Several quick alternating scenes. Hands washing under running water from a tap over a sink. Hands preparing and cooking raw chicken breast in a kitchen. Captions talk about washing your hands before and after handling raw meat.
