I love bike rides. Always have. Always will. As a kid I'd mob the town on my DiamondBack Viper hitting jumps, curbs, riding through the woods and just cruising with my neighborhood gang. As an adult I've kept the biker inside alive always having different bikes and choosing to ride over drive any chance I get. Circa 2008 I got into riding a fixie (Fixed gear - single speed, no gears or brakes) and this has been ideal for sticking and moving around the city. I even got a bicycle tattoo 🚲 with a bunch of buddies back when we were all bonding over biking. It keeps me feeling like a kid. Takes my full attention and presence. Does great for the body. Win or lose, it didn’t matter, you were having a BLAST! I think the fixie community needs to be hired to come out to road events and liven up the place because to create a vibe like this, you need people. You need people lining the streets, cheering, screaming, and having dogs pass out cash handups. I don’t know how to bring this vibe to more cycling events, but maybe less skin suits and upgrade points, and more T-shirts and beer fueled crowds. Whatever it is, more of this please! Thanks a million to the amazing community and crew who put this weekend on. Track cyclists struggle to move a fixed-gear bike from a dead stop because the setup is optimized for speed, not leverage. Track bikes use very large gear ratios, which means one pedal revolution moves the bike a long distance, but that also requires a lot of force to start turning the cranks when the bike isn’t already moving. Since a fixed gear has no freewheel, the rider can’t build momentum by spinning lightly at first—any pressure on the pedals is directly tied to the rear wheel. Add to that the lack of multiple gears, no ability to downshift, and a high saddle position that reduces how much body weight can be used for leverage, and the result is a bike that feels stubborn and heavy at a standstill, even though it feels effortless and incredibly fast once it’s rolling.
