Today is the actual birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King and we honor him with the truth. They will talk about marching, giving a holiday, and integrating, but never about the side of Dr. King who wanted money and resources for his own people . His view a had changed drastically months before his murder.
This is something that is not discussed much as many other groups have hijacked and changed the narrative of Dr. King when convenient. Integrating and marching cost them nothing but us everything! They’ll give all the monumental days and marching input, but when it comes to them resources for Black Freedmen, there’s an excuse. This is why I don’t care how many people of other races may be friendly or coming to me, they don’t support reparations, or feel the need to be bothered by me sharing my history, they are no friend. They use his quotes when it’s convenient for others to get resources or what they want though.

Black freedmen, don’t let anybody tell us about our history or heroes and stop expecting others to teach us our history. The people who use now him when it’s convenient come from people who 90% hated Dr. King.

BIOn the Racist Implications of Designating #Pretendians
I don’t know of one “public” Native & Black person who hasn’t been called a “Pretendian” at some point (many many times). I could put names out there but I don’t wanna retraumatize them and make them defend themselves anew…so I’ll put myself out there.
I remember around 2014/2015/2016 there was these weirdo white Indians who were trying to spread stuff on social media that I’m not who I say I am (and other Native and Black public folks were not who they said they were). It didn’t bother me much because 1) it’s actually pretty easy to verify if someone had basic research skills and 2) so what? I know how this internet thing goes where a lie travels at light speed but truth doesn’t get heard, so it’s just my turn. Importantly, NONE of my Native friend/ (even those who I love still to this day or those woke/activist Indians who say they are against anti-Blackness but don’t say anything when it happens) said anything publicly to dispute what they knew not to be true.
We know the reason—Native people are very comfortable with anti-blackness and racism. Even if they aren’t racist/anti-Black themselves, they were raised around it and accepting it from their racist families. I tell people “I’ve never been called the N word by any white person ever, but I’ve been called it MANY times by #Natives
So these accusations of “pretendians” are silly and loaded and racist. Guess what? There was an actual incentive for mixed Black and Native people to be legally designated as solely Black because they could be captured for inhumane and savage chattel slavery. So believe it or not, those nebulous records that are held so highly? There was a reason to cook the books. You all gotta be smarter than this.
Moreover, we have the #Freedmen dilemma…they are treaty Indians but there’s been almost NO Critical mass of Natives publicly supporting them including all the large Native organizations…
Lots more examples. But…
So in sum, do better. Stop being racist. Think about the implications of what you say. There’s a very long history of #Indigenous people being very racist and anti-Black; it’s not too late to change that.

USThe Pea Island Preservation Society held a presentation at U.S. Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, in Virginia on Feb. 21, 2021. Located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Pea Island Life-Saving Station was the first life-saving station in the country to have an all-black crew.
The Pea Island Preservation Society’s director and president, Joan Collins and Darrell Collins, who presented during this exhibition, are related to Dorman Pugh, a surfman who served under Richard Etheridge, the first black commanding officer in the Coast Guard. The Pea Island Preservation Society’s president and director are also related to Maxie Berry Sr., the last officer in charge of the station and Lt. Herbert Collins who helped decommission the station in 1947. Kevin Pruden, who was also at the ceremony, is the grandson of Keeper George Pruden.
The Pea Island Life-Saving Station operated during segregation, Jim Crowe laws and stayed open for almost 70 years as an all-black crew. The family members of these brave men now tell their story through presentations like this to their community and local schools as well as for the first time to a Coast Guard audience shown here at Base Portsmouth.

Our time in Oklahoma was met with love, warmth, and a powerful sense of community, but also with the raw frustration of descendants who have spent decades fighting for reinstatement and recognition.
Their voices, their history, and their unwavering resilience are now met with a long-overdue victory. Shout out to everyone involved in this historic journey, this is the epitome of perseverance, and we are proud to have witnessed and documented it.
