NIGhadames is calm. Peaceful. Quiet. And also… empty.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site—once a vital stop for trans-Saharan caravans—is now almost entirely free of tourists. Not because it lacks beauty, but because of years of isolation, sanctions, and political instability that have kept it off the map.
But here’s what they’re missing:
Two levels of urban life.
Covered alleyways for shade.
A network of rooftop walkways where women could move freely.
Mudbrick homes designed with climate, privacy, and community in mind.
It’s one of the most architecturally advanced desert cities in the world, and almost no one sees it.

LIGhadames is in the far south-west of Libya, near the border triangle with Tunisia and Algeria. 🇱🇾🇩🇿 🇹🇳
It’s about 600 km southwest of Tripoli by road.
🏛️ History & Heritage
Ghadames is one of North Africa’s oldest cities and was an important caravan stop on trans-Saharan trade routes.
It was historically occupied by Phoenicians, Romans (as Cydamus), and later Arabs.
The city’s old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 due to its unique desert urban layout and architecture, built to cope with the hot Sahara climate.
Recently, UNESCO removed the Old Town from the “World Heritage in Danger” list thanks to improved preservation efforts.
🏘️ What Makes Ghadames Special
Known as the “Pearl of the Desert” for its oasis setting and beautiful whitewashed traditional homes.
The Old Town has narrow interconnected alleys, multi-story mud-brick houses, and rooftop walkways that historically helped cool the interiors and create shaded public spaces.
Its architecture reflects clever adaptations to desert conditions and cultural traditions.

Atiq Mosque – one of the main historic mosques in Ghadames dating back centuries.

JOVožnja libijskim putevima koja je trajala ceo dan je vredela kada smo dobili naznaku našeg cilja, pustinjskog dragulja, grada GADAMES.
Ono što je za njega karakteristično je način gradnje. U prošlosti, jedini beg od temperatura koje su neretko prelazile i 50 stepeni, je bilo izgraditi grad iz kog neće biti potrebe izlaziti. To su postigli tako što su ulice izgledale kao zatvoreni lavirint, sa otvorima koji su bili prirodni sistem klimatizacije.
Kako se radilo o veoma konzervativnoj sredini, gradskim ulicama su se šetali samo muškarci i deca, dok su žene društveni život živele na krovovima. Krovovi su takođe imali ulice koje su povezivale sve kuće i bili svojevrsan grad iznad grada, gde niko osim drugih žena nije mogao da ih vidi.
U Gadamesu su nas i sada dočekale najviše temperature na ovom putovanju, odavno nisam osetila takvu toplotu, pa ukoliko ikada krenete u ovakvu avanturu, u obilazak krenite što ranije🌞
