Until recently, we’ve had to train robots out in the real world, where they often need human supervision and can get damaged or wear down, or get limited data like from humans in motion capture suits. This all makes robot training costly and slow. But now, companies are building tools to train robots through simulation. Basically a virtual world where robots can get digital reps. This allows us to quickly run hundreds, thousand, or even millions of simulations in a fraction of the time. @bengurionuniversity has developed DSTAR, a shape-shifting robot designed to keep moving when the terrain stops cooperating. The robot can switch between driving and crawling, shifting its body and wheel position instead of getting stuck on rough ground. It can crawl using a “turtle gait,” roll sideways, move across dirt, stones and grass, and climb obstacles up to 20 centimeters high. The idea is a compact Israeli robot that could eventually help in search-and-rescue zones, disaster sites, tunnels, military terrain, and places where normal wheeled robots fail.
