Keeping your Larsen violin strings in good shape really matters. The great news: it’s easy! Regular cleaning makes a real difference and helps your strings perform at their best. 💪 After playing, simply wipe away rosin dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Once a month - or when the sound starts to feel dull and loses its sparkle - give your strings a slightly more thorough clean. 🎻 Join violin maker and restorer Martin Opstrup as he demonstrates our recommended cleaning process (link in bio) 🎥 #larsenstrings #violin #violinstrings #strings #violinist

I’ve tested thousands of strings over the years and I can say: strings have a HUGE impact on a violin’s timbre. The right set can give your instrument a real boost and help you discover your own sound as an artist. Here are some essential criteria you should have in mind while trying out strings. Martelé has always felt to me like the most fundamental, and most profound, bow stroke in violin playing. It’s connected to everything. In the years when I was obsessively trying to build my technique, after watching so many masterclass videos of Mimi Zweig teaching this stroke, I practiced it religiously every day for many, many years. I still do. The concept of stillness before the attack and complete release after the sound begins is everything. Take time to organize the hand and arm so everything is balanced before engaging the string. Once the note speaks, allow both hands to release fully. You’re getting sound “for free.” That balance between preparation and freedom defines the stroke. It has profound implications when applied to difficult passagework. Learn it first on open strings across all four strings, then apply it to scales - more on that in the next video!

When strings lose their core, something important disappears: response. You dig into the string… and instead of giving sound back, it just crunches. No resonance. No ring. No cushion under the bow. You start working harder… Pressing more… Blaming your technique… But often the real problem is simple: your strings are dead. A fresh set of strings can change everything — tone, response, control, confidence. Runners replace their shoes before they fall apart because worn-out shoes stop giving energy back. Violin strings are exactly the same. If you’re wondering whether it’s your strings, your setup, or your technique that’s holding you back- Comment 15 and I’ll send you a link to book a free 15-minute call. I’ll listen to your playing, identify the real issue, and give you one concrete thing to work on this week. #violin #violintechnique #violinteacher #violín #violinist #violinpractice #theviolingym

Scroll for top 4 physical reasons for inconsistent intonation😅 At home, you may be relaxed enough to be able to play in tune. But if this falls apart in lesson or in performance, it’s time to get curious. The problem could be mental or physical, here I will list what I view as the most common physical issues for intonation on the violin and viola : 1. Immobile elbow (forcing fingers and wrist to compensate) 2. Unpredictable Thumb - instead of providing an anchor point for position, it may move of its own will and not be linked to the placement of the other fingers. Alternatively, it may stay in first position when you shift into third, etc. The thumb is the unsung hero when it comes to position changes ! 3. Lack of clear “hand frame” or “hand shape” knowing the half-step whole step intervals between the fingers, and playing finger by finger (the equivalent of typing on a computer with just one finger). Makes playing feel like a game of roulette. This can mean placing fingers at different angles/different shapes. Sometimes flopping down flat, sometimes diagonally… 4. Increased general tension under pressure - less finger flexibility, different sensation of the instrument in the hand, creates a desire to “force “ and “try harder” which can exacerbate the problem. Do you struggle with any of these ? The physical part is only one piece of the puzzle, let’s talk about the “mental visualisation of sound “ soon ! 🎻✨🔥 #violintips #violinlesson #intonation #violin #viola

Welcome down here ⬇️ The only limiting factor determining how well you do at learning violin is the effort that you choose to put in. I have taught students from the age of two to over 60, and I can 100% guarantee you that it has nothing to do with your ethnic background, your age, or your level of education. I say this with absolute honesty. Some people, regardless of all of those factors and more, will pick up a violin like they played it in their past life. Others will struggle for a year just to feel even slightly comfortable with it. But in honest truth, the people who struggle the most with things like bowing straight have to work so hard at that skill that when they finally develop it, it never goes away. They have trained that skill into their body so meticulously. And that’s the point of this story. If you really suck at something — especially in your violin playing — it is not a negative. It is one of the greatest gifts you can have in your life. Sure, you’ll have people telling you that you might as well give up, that you sound terrible, that you’re too old, or whatever else they decide to say. Just remember this: those voices have nothing to do with your journey. What we persist in doing becomes easier — not because the thing changes, but because we do.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson If you are a beginner-intermediate Violin learner and you want to make sure that you are not missing any vital steps in your learning journey…. If you’re done with wondering why your pitch isn’t improving or not knowing what to do next to improve your sound… If a daily practice plan and reminder would give you boost you need, I created a 7 Day Challenge just for you. ✨ Over 7 days, a new lesson will unlock, with daily reminders in your inbox so you don’t simply ‘forget’ to practice. 👉Comment “7 DAYS” and I’ll send it to you🎻 *make sure you’re following me or Instagram might not let my message get through Violin With Catherine #violín #playviolin #violintechnique #violinstagram #violinlessons

And yes, I’m whistling here, no editing, the same take. Choosing an instrument is, for a violinist, a creative — and even slightly mystical process. I’ve played some extraordinary instruments, including Guarneri, Stradivari, and Amati. And yet, my old violin — the one I started playing back in school — remains something truly special.

If you want to change the width of your vibrato you can adjust the width of the initial shake After that the vibrato releases and that means that the following vibrato movements will follow the momentum from this If you want a narrow vibrato start the initial shake closer to the pitch If you want a wider vibrato start the initial shake further away from the pitch Generally I recommend starting first with a wider vibrato, as that’s easier to do in a relaxed manner For more tips like this [DM] me the word “natural” and I’ll send you my FREE ebook 📖 - 🎻Massenet Meditation from Thais - #violin #viola #cello #dounisvibrato #dounistips #dounis
