Yesterday I shared what isn’t included in the Beighton score, and today I’m showing you some of those joints in action - neck, shoulders, ribcage, jaw, hips, feet - because they absolutely influence how a hypermobile body functions day to day. For context, I’m a 9/9 on the Beighton score, and many of my other joints move even more than it captures. Some have been painful at times, some aren’t, and some have stiffened over the years. Bodies adapt! Strength training, bracing strategies, injury, and protective tension can all reduce visible range without changing the underlying connective tissue pattern. The Beighton score assesses nine specific joints and is part of the current diagnostic criteria for hEDS. It’s helpful and standardized, but it doesn’t assess the cervical spine, rib mechanics, shoulder translation, jaw mobility, foot behaviour, or pelvic organization. It also doesn’t capture what your mobility looked like historically before stiffness developed. Diagnosis of HSD or hEDS is layered and naunced. It considers historical hypermobility, tissue qualities such as skin extensibility and mild fragility, and broader systemic patterns - not just one score. A few bendy joints don’t automatically mean a hereditary connective tissue disorder, and a lower score doesn’t automatically rule one out either. It’s also important to remember that not every provider has specific training in hypermobility. I’m not an oncologist, and general practitioners aren’t automatically specialists in connective tissue disorders. Some have a deep interest and knowledge base, and some simply haven’t had exposure to it. I had to educate myself, review the criteria carefully, and bring my findings to my GP. I know that seems unfair and frustrating but it’s true ❤️ As a physio, I assess the whole body — how load is shared, where compensation happens, which areas are excessively mobile, which have stiffened, and how it all connects. My goal is to help you understand the framework so you can piece your own picture together with clarity and walk into appointments informed. #HypermobilityEducation #hEDS #HSD #BeightonScore #WholeBodyAssessment Education only, not medical advice ❤️

What’s “normal” for us hypermobile humans can be VERY different from the non-bendy population 🦓 Here’s a few examples of my husband Dan vs me. It is absolutely possible to be hypermobile and have zero issues. But many people do have symptoms related to this, and don’t realize hypermobility may be part of the picture. Some examples here that are considered hypermobile based on research ranges of motion include: • elbow hyperextension at least 10° • MCP joint extension more than 45° • cervical extension more than 75° • forward fold with palms flat to the floor, knees locked • reverse prayer being easy • IP joint hyperextension >20° There is some variation in what’s considered “normal” depending on the research, and this is not an official screening tool. The Beighton score is what’s currently used for part of the hEDS and HSD diagnosis, but it has some well-known limitations. For example, MCP extension >45° is often considered hypermobile in research, but Beighton requires >90°. So this is simply to help you start recognizing what might be hypermobility. Because you can be “close” to the cutoff and still have a body that feels like this. It’s a spectrum and learning about all the things that can be involved in managing a hypermobile body and its potential connective tissue issues. To get you started I put together a free PDF guide as an easy but comprehensive resource with the Top 3 fundamental movements I teach to start building control in a hypermobile body. Comment or DM “Top 3” and I’ll send it your way 🙌 #hypermobilespectrumdisorder #EDS #hEDS #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #HSD

The Beighton misses a LOT. Just because you can’t do the most characteristic of party tricks, doesn’t mean you don’t have hypermobility. It can show up in so many different places and different joints. Sometimes if we have enough instability, which often comes along- we can actually get really tight in certain areas, which is basically our body trying to create the stability it’s lacking. The signs aren’t always super obvious. They can be- but just because someone has more obvious hypermobility doesn’t mean they have more problems. They might, they might not. Connective tissue is everywhere in our bodies. You can’t see someone’s GI issues, pelvic pain, or migraines from the outside. When it isn’t as visually obvious, it’s really easy to gaslight yourself. “Well I can’t do that one weird thing” “Well their knees bend back so much farther” But it isn’t a competition. And we can slowly learn to trust ourselves, what we feel and what our body is telling us. Connective tissue disorders like all the different subtypes of EDS and HSD exist along a spectrum, so it can look entirely different from person to person. The best thing I ever did was learn to trust myself. It’s a slow process, but understanding my my body alone has changed everything for me. Of course this is not medical advice. Just a simple invitation to listen and trust yourself more. You are always valid🤍 #hypermobile #hypermobility #heds #hsd #chronicpain

Ever hear someone say, “I wish I was flexible like you?” Well… they might want to be careful what they wish for. Living in a hypermobile body is a lot more complicated than most people realize. Figuring out where the heck your body is in space can feel weirdly challenging. 👉That’s why I created Ground Control, an intro to stability and pain management group coaching program for hypermobile humans! 👉Ground Control starts Monday March 30, and doors open Monday March 23. Stay tuned for more info! This reel shows just a few examples of the extra work a bendy body has to do all day long to keep joints feeling somewhat stable and less painful. That’s a lot of extra load on your nervous system. One working theory is that this constant demand may contribute to the higher sympathetic tone we often see in hypermobile humans. There’s even speculation that it could play a role in the overlap between hypermobility, ADHD, and autism. The root cause is still being debated, but the pattern is hard to ignore. All that extra effort to stay upright and stable can absolutely contribute to fatigue. And that’s before you layer in things like MCAS, dysautonomia, GI dysfunction, and everything else that tends to travel with us. The good news is that there are a lot of things we can train to make this endless mental checklist a little easier. You can train this. We can improve proprioception. We can build deep stabilizer strength. We can regulate the nervous system to downgrade that excessive sympathetic tone. These things aren’t easy, but they are possible and I see improvements in my hypermobile patients and clients all the time. We just need the right approach that’s individualized to really meet your body where it’s at. The hypermobility posture guide is a great 1st step if you need i! Comment the word GUIDE and I’ll send it to you! #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #hEDS #EDS #Hypermobility #HSD

Struggling with bimanual coordination as a hypermobile person is more common than you think. Tasks like buttoning shirts, playing guitar or cutting food can feel much harder when proprioception, sensory processing and cross hemisphere communication are working against you. Hypermobility often comes with proprioceptive difficulty, neurodivergent processing and even skipped crawling patterns, all of which make two handed tasks feel confusing or tiring. The good news is that you can train this. Working one side of the body at the same time as the other helps build better communication between the hemispheres of the brain and improves control over time. #hypermobility #EDS #HSD #chronicpain #propriocpetion

My coach once said to me “I think you’re making up this pain to get out of training”. I’ve also been told most of these comments before from other practitioners and coaches. Knowing the signs and symptoms can help people receive proper care for hEDS/HSD and put people on the right path for interventions any co-morbidities that may be also contributing to their symptoms. You don’t need to be an expert, but you should be curious to want to know more. If you’re a practitioner or coach and don’t know the signs, it’s time to level up your knowledge 🧠 #hypermobility #hsd #heds

If you’re hypermobile and your traps always feel “tight,” massage usually isn’t the long-term solution. It’s easy to assume that having tightness means you need to release it, but that tension often isn’t just from muscle tightness. It’s coming from overuse driven by compensation. When the smaller stabilizing muscles around the shoulder aren’t contributing effectively to support and control the joint, the body compensates and the upper traps step in to help create stability. During movements like overhead presses or lateral raises, your shoulders may start to elevate and your upper traps take over, even when you’re not trying to engage them. That’s your body trying to create stability, just not in a way that’s efficient or sustainable. Over time, that constant demand is what creates the feeling of persistent tension. Massage and other forms of myofascial release may help temporarily, but if nothing else changes, those same muscles will keep doing the work and the tension will persist. Comment “tight” if you want a part 2 on how to actually offload your traps and improve shoulder stability. . . . . . . . . #hypermobility #hEDS #HSD #hypermobileehlersdanlos #uppertraps

Have you heard of piezogenic papules before? They are little fat deposits that protrude into the dermis during weight bearing. They happen more commonly when connective tissue is weaker, allowing fat to herniate through. 🤯 These are benign and quite common, and can also come from prolonged standing and high impact exercise like running. Do you have these? Let me know in the comments! 🚨 This is for educational purposes only, not intended as medical advice or to diagnose. #hypermobilityawareness #hsd #heds #hypermobilelife #holisticchiropractic
