Just a preface: I am not hyper mobile, so my demonstrations won’t be an example of what a hyper mobile joint looks like so if you do suspect you’re hyper mobile do some research and speak to a professional this video is NOT to diagnose anyone 🩷 This is also a good time to say that hyper mobility is a connective tissue disorder causing joint laxity You can be hypermobile and flexible, you can be not flexible and hyper mobile, you can be flexible but not hypermobile Hyper flexibility does NOT equal hyper mobility 🩷 Moving on to the topic at hand: I have worked with a few clients who are hypermobile and these are the methods we use to ensure they are comfortable 1) use props to support the joints 💪 stretching is uncomfortable but shouldn’t be causing any sharp pains in your joints, use props to give that added support so we don’t hyper extend and we can feel more comfortable 2) strength train 🫡 if your joints are stronger you’ll be more protected and have more control over your joints this will bring greater body awareness to that joint so you’ll be better at preventing hyper extension 3) be aware ALWAYS 🩷 whenever you engage in flexi training always check you’re keeping what will feel like a soft bend in your knee, try and stretch in front of a mirror so you can see what your joints are doing And again if you know you are hypermobile or suspect you are go see a professional as this is not medical advice 🩷 Stretch safely gang 🥹

⚠️ Tap here for the answer! ✅ Spoiler alert: Ehlers Danlos Here you can see a patient with hyperelastic skin… This is most commonly found in ✅ Ehlers Danlos syndrome Abnormal collagen development makes skin, joints and supportive structures hyperelastic! There are many underlying genetic causes with many (13!) subtypes… the disease can range from hyper flexibility, to debilitating joint pain and fatigue… and even severe consequences like aortic dissections and strokes in some forms. #doctor #nurse #medico #mbbs #medstudent #usmle #medical

So I’ve been asked to do this. Okay then, so why not… There’s no trick but most people (that’s you) can do this. I know some are either double jointed (or even triple jointed) and have hyper flexibility / hypermobility like myself. Would you try? * Fun Fact * If you did this again with your middle finger pushed under the palm of your hand, you won’t be able to do this. Even I can’t.

Most people mistake hyper-mobility for flexibility. I once assessed an Iyengar yoga instructor who could wrap her legs behind her head, but when I measured her properly, her hamstrings were as tight as a competitive marathoner who never stretches. 125 degrees of knee extension. Normal is 170–180. She wasn’t stretching her hamstrings. She was stretching the ligaments of her spine. There’s a big difference. Just because you can contort your body into impressive shapes doesn’t mean your tissues are healthy. In fact, often it means you’re borrowing a range of motion from places that should be stable. Most people don’t have a flexibility problem. They have a compensation pattern. This is why assessment matters. This is why measurement matters. This is why there is a science to what I do and have taught all @chekinstitute Practitioners Love and chi, - Paul

What does being good at Yoga mean? I often get people hesitant to begin yoga due to the misconception and stereotype. They often ask me if I was good at yoga before becoming a teacher so I often find myself asking them “what does being good at yoga mean?” My answer is alway this, “you don’t have to be good at yoga to practice yoga” You don’t have to have hyper flexibility you don’t have to be able to do handstands, you don’t need to be a particular body shape or weight and yes men can do it too. I tell them, you just need to show up for yourself, breathe connect your body and mind and take it one day at a time.

Member of the month goes to Mary Novotny. Check out what Mary has to say about Burn since becoming a member in August of 2022. What made you join Bum? The trainers. I’ve been a member of several different gyms but Burn was the first place I’ve been able to push myself despite my back/hyper flexibility. I’m doing things with my body that 2 years ago I didn’t think I could do. What’s your favorite thing about Burn? The community. Love that everyone cheers each other on and pushes each other in a positive way. What has changed in your life since joining Burn? I have significantly less back pain and feel more comfortable/confident in my own skin. What is your favorite and least favorite move? Favorite snatches least favorite is anything with sliders What is your favorite protocol? Arm day Tell us a funny story that has happened at Burn? First time I tried to do a pull up with the bands I ended up in an awkward contorted mess.

“Hyper-flexibility causes damage.” I hear that all the time. People ask me for proof that the 7 Postures aren’t dangerous. Here is the proof. A body that moves freely and produces force. At age 52 🤝⁉️🤷🏽💡 I can dunk barefoot on concrete. I can generate 996 punch power. If I was just flexible, my body wouldn’t handle that. If I was weak, my structure would collapse. Because flexibility alone is not the goal. With the 7 Postures, we follow steps: Static passive → Static active → Dynamic passive → Dynamic active. First repair the body. Realign it. Educate the fascia. Then we move. Run. Jump. Land. Play. Mobility isn’t the end goal. It’s the foundation for real movement.

Let’s talk HYPER MOBILITY. If you like yoga because you’re super flexible and it comes very easily to you, same. It makes sense! We like what we can do easily! But hyper flexibility isn’t gonna save you from falling when you’re old. Being super bendy isn’t necessarily going to add stability. Enter: workshop 🤓 YOGA FOR THE HYPER-MOBILE Sunday July 20th in LB We will explore ways to make commonly taught postures more fundamentally stable by getting detailed with muscle engagement. If you’re at the point where you shove your shin parallel to the top of the mat in pigeon just to “feel the stretch” this workshop is for you 😉
