RADelousing chemicals have historically been used at land borders to prevent the spread of lice and disease, especially in the early–mid 20th century. At some crossings, migrants were required to undergo “disinfection” procedures where clothing was steamed or treated, and individuals were sprayed with harsh chemicals like kerosene-based solutions or later insecticides meant to kill lice. These practices were often justified as public-health measures but were invasive, uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous, exposing people to substances that irritated skin, eyes, and lungs.
Over time, the chemicals shifted to more modern insecticides, including DDT in the mid-1900s and later various delousing powders or shampoos, though such procedures have largely been discontinued due to ethical and health concerns. The legacy of these delousing practices remains controversial, as they highlighted the power imbalance at borders and the ways “health” was sometimes used to justify degrading treatment. Today, delousing is no longer practiced this way, but its history is remembered as an example of how vulnerable people can be subjected to harsh methods in the name of control.
