UCStephen Menendian, the assistant director and director of research at UC Berkeley’s Othering and Belonging Institute, has spent over 15 years studying structural racism.
As he defines it, structural racism means that policies may be written without the express intent of oppressing people of color, but their effects can still deepen inequality on a racial basis. That’s the paradox at the center of his life’s work.
In this 101 in 101 video, a series that challenges UC Berkeley faculty to explain their field in 101 seconds, Menendian explains how most of the mechanisms that form structural racism –– like mass incarceration –– have taken shape in the post-Civil Rights era.
Menendian hopes that with deeper, data-driven understanding, we can begin to untangle the interlocking webs that hold back people of color.

SKDassault Mirage IIIV program's second prototype (IIIV-02) was destroyed in a crash on November 28, 1966, during a transition test flight at Istres Air Base.
The crash occurred due to instrumentation issues and control instability while shifting from vertical to horizontal flight. This loss, following earlier accidents with the Balzac V testbed and the IIIV itself, led to the program's cancellation because of complexity and changing NATO priorities.

Research links BPD to adverse childhood experiences, like trauma, neglect, or inconsistent environments. Neuroimaging reveals a hyperactive amygdala paired with reduced prefrontal cortex regulation, which can make emotions feel intense, impulsive, and overwhelming, especially in relationships.

THThere's 1 spine surgery I regret. I regret my 4th spine surgery. The biggest reason I regret this surgery is for the severe complications that happened to me. The surgery went different than we discussed. The angle of my neck was changed I was livid after spending 8 months in a halo & enduring 2 neck fusions. The 1st time I stood up I was able to see the ground & I said "Why can I see the ground??? Why would you change it???". I had severe neck pain postop. It was different than neck surgery pain but I fell on deaf ears. Nobody would listen to me at the hospital. I "didn't look sick enough" to require being in the hospital. The medical gaslighting was at an all time high. I was extremely vulnerable & didn't have the fight in me. I left because I mentally couldn't deal with the residents, not because my body felt better. I would be officially diagnosed with a broken neck when I went back to the hospital 10/16/2017. The pain I endured was out of this world. More to come about how my neck broke at home over the course of 11 days.
As for the fusion, hidsight is 2020. I/we were making the best decision we could with the information that we had. I was incredibly symptomatic. Neuro symptoms ruled my life. My spine was being pulled like crazy to the left & right from spasms out of my control. It was like being constricted by a snake. My neck was falling forward below my fusion at T3-T7/8. I developed scoliosis out of the blue. My legs had weakness & shaking. There were more symptoms. The surgery went different than discussed. For a very long time I was hung up thinking, "I wonder if I would still be fused to my pelvis if tethered cord was caught sooner". I'll never know for sure.
