Here’s the thing about research 👇🏻 It shows a level of curiosity and commitment that goes beyond any grade or test score. Admission officers are looking for students who aren’t just good at memorizing facts, but who dive deep into their interests, who question, analyze, and innovate. When a high school student chooses to take on a research project, it tells colleges they’re ready for college-level work, that they’re passionate, and that they’ve got the initiative to push themselves. And it’s not just for science majors—whether you’re into history, literature, engineering, or business, research is a powerful way to stand out in any field. This is exactly what the IRIS Program is here for. IRIS is a 6-week research journey designed to help you explore your chosen field with guidance from top professors and experts. Imagine learning directly from professors at Ivy League and top UK universities, building a research project that reflects your passion and showcases your dedication. Each week, you’ll work through live lectures, office hours, and 1:1 mentorship to bring your research to life. By the end of the program, you won’t just have completed a research project—you’ll have a standout piece for your college application that shows who you are and what you’re capable of. Plus, if you’re aiming for publication, IRIS can help you craft a paper that’s submission-ready. Admissions officers value research because it’s proof of your readiness, your curiosity, and your potential. If you’re serious about building a college application that gets noticed, comment “IRIS” to learn how to get started. #research #researchproject #researchprojectforhighschool #indigoresearch #highschoolresearch #researchprogram #collegeapp

✨Interleaving explained ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Cognitive science supports interleaving because it supports the “spacing effect,” which shows that distributing learning over time is more effective than massed practice. The image you screenshot shows a typical study session. You have many subjects in one semester so you block your time by subjects. Subject A, subject B, subject C. If you study one subject for 3 or 4 hours, you are more likely to lose concentration the last half an hour or an hour. Interleaving challenges the brain to differentiate between concepts, making it work harder to retrieve information. So when you study subject A for one hour and then move on to subject B for another hour you are fully concentrated for 2hours straight because you shift your concentration to a new concept. This process strengthens memory and promotes better transfer of knowledge to real-world situations. 📚Promotes better discrimination: Interleaving helps learners differentiate between closely related topics or concepts, enhancing their ability to recognize subtle differences. 📚Boosts adaptability: It encourages the brain to flexibly apply knowledge in various contexts, leading to improved problem-solving skills. 📚Fights illusions of competence: Traditional blocked practice can create a false sense of mastery, whereas interleaving reveals areas of weakness, allowing for more targeted improvement. 📚Enhances long-term retention: Increasing the chances of retaining knowledge over time. In essence, interleaving is a valuable technique for any subject that requires a deep understanding and the ability to apply knowledge in diverse contexts. #study #studysession #studymotivation #studywithme #studymotivation #studynotes #studytechniques #studydesk #interleaving #interleaving #studytechnique #interleave #uni #unilife #desksetup #groupstudying

I started my science career at Imperial College London when I was 18 and just moved to the UK on my own to pursue my dreams. Undergraduates were tough and I felt like I was not good enough to be there about 99% of the time. And the truth is, I most likely wasn’t. There were so many smart people there, so much more knowledgeable than I was. But I was a hard worker, and I pushed through. At the end of my bachelors I was thinking of going back home or switching to the business courses because science was not my thing. Then, at the end of my third year during a presentation on my work as an intern I met the person who will then become my Masters and PhD supervisor. Unlike all the other teachers I have had before, he actually thought I had potential and said I should apply for masters in his group. I did. There, I met a PhD student who became my co-supervisor. She was incredibly patient, kind and clever. She talked about labs in a way that no one else during my undergraduate course had done before. Thanks to these people I started falling back in love with science again and thought that maybe - just maybe - I had a shot at having a career in that field. So I worked my hardest and ended up applying for a PhD and I guess the rest is history. People from the outside often assume that since I am doing research, I have always been good at what I do. That is definitely not the case. I am most definitely not perfect now. But every skill can be learned if you put the right amount of effort, passion, and you have the right support. I was lucky. After years of being told I was not good enough and just when I was about to quit my passion, the universe sent me two incredible mentors. If you are reading this and you are hoping to pursue a PhD or a career in research, I will leave you with this piece of advice: make sure you surround yourself with the right people. Great supervisors truly do make a difference in the quality of research you will produce and the type of experience you will have.

Surprisingly a PhD isn’t just sitting at a desk, reading papers, and being “aesthetically smart.” Here are skills I didn’t expect to need — but use constantly: 1. Public speaking & confidence You present all the time. Lab meetings. Progress reviews. Conferences. You need to explain your work: • clearly • concisely • confidently People form their impression of your research through how you present it. If you can communicate well, your work is understood better — and you’re perceived as a more competent researcher. 2. Translating your work (not sounding smart for the sake of it) A huge misconception is that sounding complicated = being smart. It’s actually the opposite. If people can’t understand your work, they’ll assume you don’t understand it. Being able to explain complex ideas simply — to people from different backgrounds — shows true mastery. If you really know your work, you can explain it to any intelligent person. 3. Coding I’m doing a PhD in psychology. We weren’t taught much coding in undergrad. Yet most of my PhD involves: • coding experiments • coding statistical analyses • working with data constantly I code more than I read or write some weeks. 4. Skimming papers efficiently You cannot read every paper deeply. You need to: • skim fast • identify what’s relevant • decide what’s worth deep reading Trying to read everything in depth is not productive. A PhD is about covering a lot of ground strategically before going into depth. 5. Understanding what “expert” actually means Doing a PhD doesn’t make you an expert in all of psychology. You become an expert in something extremely specific. Think: not the forest → not the tree → not even the leaf but a cell on one leaf. And that’s normal. A PhD isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about knowing one very small thing extremely well — and being able to explain why it matters.

How many animations can you count in this video? One of my biggest tips to other science communicators is to ILLUSTRATE YOUR CONCLUSIONS. And please not in an overly complicated graph. I mean in actual illustrations or animations. Instead of showing a graph of flow direction at my site I chose to make an animation which would better illustrate flow direction over time. #conference #sciencecommunication #fieldbiologist #marinebiology #seaslugs
